Navigation of drones is predominantly based on sensor fusion algorithms. Most of these algorithms make use of some form of Bayesian filtering with a majority employing an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF), wherein inertial measurements are fused with a Global N ...

Tightly-coupled sensor orientation, i.e. the simultaneous processing of temporal (GNSS and raw inertial) and spatial (image and lidar) constraints in a common adjustment, has demonstrated significant improvement in the quality of attitude determination wit ...

Autonomous navigation of small UAVs is typically based on the integration of inertial navigation systems (INS) together with global navigation satellite systems (GNSS). However, GNSS signals can face various forms of interference affecting their continuous ...

VR (Virtual Reality) is a real-time simulation that creates the subjective illusion of being in a virtual world. This thesis explores how integrating the user's body and fingers can be achieved and beneficial for the user to experience VR. At the advent of ...

This paper proposes a novel method to improve georeferencing of airborne laser scanning by improved trajectory estimation using Vehicle Dynamic Model. In Vehicle Dynamic Model (VDM), the relationship between the dynamics of the platform and control inputs ...

Objective. Powered lower-limb prostheses relying on decoding motor intentions from non-invasive sensors, like electromyographic (EMG) signals, can significantly improve the quality of life of amputee subjects. However, the optimal combination of high decod ...

We interact with the world through a body that includes hands and fingers. Likewise, providing an avatar allowing the control of a virtual body with fingers is an important step to improve the user experience in VR. When the user and their avatar skeleton ...

Purpose: To develop a self-navigated motion compensation strategy for 3D radial MRI that can compensate for continuous head motion by measuring rigid body motion parameters with high temporal resolution from the central k-space acquisition point (self-enco ...

Smartphones enable understanding human behavior with activity recognition to support peoples daily lives. Prior studies focused on using inertial sensors to detect simple activities (sitting, walking, running, etc.) and were mostly conducted in homogeneous ...

Human motion analysis and synthesis is integral to many computer vision applications, from autonomous driving to sports analysis. In this thesis, we address several problems in this domain. First we consider active viewpoint selection for pose estimation w ...

We report results from an experimental investigation on the fluid-structure interactions of flapping foils with tapered thickness profiles actuated in a quiescent viscous fluid. We seek to assess the propulsive performance of two sets of flapping foils; on ...

In airborne laser scanning a high-frequency trajectory solution is typically determined from inertial sensors and employed to directly geo-reference the acquired laser points. When low-cost MEMS inertial sensors are used, such as in lightweight unmanned ae ...

The estimation of the orientation of an object, and a human head in particular, can be defined by the Euler angles: the yaw, pitch and roll. The robust and drift-free estimation of those angles is usually achieved with the data from several sensors such as ...

The Vehicle Dynamic Model (VDM) based navigation of fixed-wing drones determines the airborne trajectory in conjunction with Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) sensors. Without Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) signals, this method estimates navigati ...

Safety-critical navigation applications require that estimation errors be reliably quantified and bounded. Over the last decade, significant effort has been put to guarantee a bounded position estimation by using Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) ...

The Hubble constant (H-0) is one of the fundamental parameters in cosmology, but there is a heated debate around the > 4 sigma tension between the local Cepheid distance ladder and the early Universe measurements. Strongly lensed Type Ia supernovae (LSNe I ...

As one of the three most popular sports in the Summer Olympics, competitive swimming has always been an attractive subject of study for sports scientists. The intricate nature of the swimmer's movements and the variety of techniques have led coaches to req ...

We propose a novel machine learning (ML)-driven methodology to estimate biomechanical variables of interest traditionally obtained from upper-extremity musculoskeletal (MSK) modeling. MSK models facilitate personalized modeling, perform "what-if" analyses, ...

Cargo drones are designed to carry payloads with predefined shape, size, and/or mass. This lack of flexibility requires a fleet of diverse drones tailored to specific cargo dimensions. Here we propose a new reconfigurable drone based on a modular design th ...

Detecting people from 2D images and analyzing their motion in 3D have been long standing computer vision problems central to numerous applications such as autonomous driving and athletic training. Recently, with the availability of large amounts of trainin ...
