A Finite Element Model produced from a real WC-10wt.%Co sample is used to study the mechanical behavior of cemented carbides in compression tests. The model is obtained by slicing the sample by Focused Ion Beam and reconstructing it. This model is used to ...

Time series play a crucial role in many fields, including finance, healthcare, industry, and environmental monitoring. The storage and retrieval of time series can be challenging due to their unstoppable growth. In fact, these applications often sacrifice ...

Calcined coal gangue (CCG) exhibits promising application potential in limestone-cement binary binders. However, the activity of CCG would possibly be weakened due to the particle agglomeration after calcination. In the present research, we tried to overco ...

Damage zones exist around crustal faults, where micro- and macrocracks coexist and form a complex conduit network for fluid flow. The permeability of these zones can change rapidly as the crack network evolves during deformation. To investigate the relativ ...

Most codes of practice adopt a semi probabilistic design approach for the dimensioning and assessment of structures. Accordingly, structural safety is ensured by performing limit state verifications using design values determined with adequately calibrated ...

Single-crystal magnesium micropillars (5 mu m diameter) have been fabricated using focused ion beam (FIB) milling and loaded in compression along the [2110] direction at cryogenic temperature (T = 184 K) at three different strain rates: 10-4, 5 x 10-3 and ...

The past decades have witnessed rapid growth in imaging as a major form of communication between individuals. Due to recent advances in capture, storage, delivery and display technologies, consumers demand improved perceptual quality while requiring reduce ...

This paper presents the experimental results of two welded unreinforced flange-welded web (WUF-W) beam-to-column connections that defy the current design paradigm of prequalified welded connections. The proposed WUF-W connections feature customized beveled ...

Positron emission tomography is a nuclear imaging technique well known for its use in oncology for cancer diagnosis and staging. A PET scanner is a complex machine which comprises photodetectors placed in a ring configuration that detect gamma photons gen ...

This paper presents the experimental results from nine full-scale concrete-filled double-skin tubular (CFDST) beam-columns. The test specimens exploited two fabrication strategies, featuring either hollow steel inner skins with corrugated geometry or ultra ...

Variant reorientation is a ubiquitous phenomenon in shape memory alloys and has a great influence on their texture and mechanical response. In the present study, a martensitic NiTi rolled sheet is investigated by the electron backscattering diffraction (EB ...

Following the significant improvement in their properties during the last decade, Distributed Fiber Optics sensing (DFOs) techniques are nowadays implemented for industrial use in the context of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM). While these techniques ha ...

Since its invention in the 19th century, photography has allowed to create durable images of the world around us by capturing the intensity of light that flows through a scene, first analogically by using light-sensitive material, and then, with the advent ...

The thermally activated pyramidal-to-basal (PB) transition of (c + a) dislocations, transforming glissile pyramidal dissociated core structures into sessile basal dissociated ones, lies at the origin of low ductility in pure magnesium (Mg). Solute-accelera ...

The effect of the stress ratio (R = sigma(min)/sigma(max)) on the fatigue behavior of (+/- 45)(2s) angle-ply glass/epoxy composite laminates was investigated by comparing their mechanical, thermal, and optical properties under the stress ratio of 0.5 with ...

The use of supplementary cementitious materials (SCM) to lower the clinker factor of cements is now commonplace, for it benefits performance, economics and ecology. This thesis focuses on ternary blends of limestone and calcined kaolinitic clays, two very ...

A multi-phase Ti-6Al-4V prepared by electron beam melting and thermal post treatments has been shown to exhibit increased strength and ductility over standard wrought or hot isostatic pressed Ti-6-Al-4V. The mechanical improvements are due to a prolonged, ...

The mobility of water within the microstructure of hardened cement paste has been at the center of a long-lasting debate, motivated by the need to understand the fundamental mechanisms that play a role in drying, shrinkage, creep, and thermal expansion. Ou ...

Although privacy is generally considered to be the right of an individual or group to control information about themselves, such a right has become challenging to protect in the digital era, this is exemplified by the case of cloud-based genomic computing. ...

This work shows how one can probe the micromechanical strength of ceramic reinforcements used in metal matrix composites, which greatly influences the mechanical performance of the composite material yet has seldom been quantified with precision. More spec ...
