Computer systems rely heavily on abstraction to manage the exponential growth of complexity across hardware and software. Due to practical considerations of compatibility between components of these complex systems across generations, developers have favou ...

Fuzzing has emerged as the most broadly used testing technique to discover bugs. Effective fuzzers rely on coverage to prioritize inputs that exercise new program areas. Edge-based code coverage of the Program Under Test (PUT) is the most commonly used cov ...

Double-fetch bugs are a plague across all major operating system kernels. They occur when data is fetched twice across the user/kernel trust boundary while allowing concurrent modification. Such bugs enable an attacker to illegally access memory, cause den ...

The expeditious proliferation of Internet connectivity and the growing adoption of digital products have transformed various spheres of our everyday lives. This increased digitization of society has led to the emergence of new applications, which are deplo ...

Writing a correct operating system kernel is notoriously hard. Kernel code requires manual memory management and type-unsafe code and must efficiently handle complex, asynchronous events. In addition, increasing CPU core counts further complicate kernel de ...

The Universal Serial Bus (USB) connects external devices to a host. This interface exposes the OS kernels and device drivers to attacks by malicious devices. Unfortunately, kernels and drivers were developed under a security model that implicitly trusts co ...

In a non-uniform memory access machine, the placement of software threads to hardware cores can have a significant effect on the performance of concurrent applications. Detecting the best possible placement for each application is a necessity for thread sc ...

This paper analyzes the impact on application performance of the design and implementation choices made in two widely used open-source schedulers: ULE, the default FreeBSD scheduler, and CFS, the default Linux scheduler. We compare ULE and CFS in otherwise ...

Scheduling in datacenters is an important, yet challenging problem. Datacenters are composed of a large number, typically tens of thousands, of commodity computers running a variety of data-parallel jobs. The role of the scheduler is to assign cluster reso ...

Numerous Directed-Acyclic Graph (DAG) schedulers have been developed to improve the energy efficiency of various multi-core platforms. However, these schedulers make a priori assumptions about the relationship between the task dependencies, and they are un ...

In a virtualized environment, device drivers are often run inside a virtual machine (VM) rather than in the hypervisor. Doing so protects the hypervisor from bugs in the driver, and also allows the reuse of the device driver and its support infrastructure ...

Open source software have evolved into powerful tools for real-time control of mechatronic systems. They are of interest for academic purposes, as they promise high flexibility at low cost. In this paper, we investigate the performance of an open source co ...

Novel reconfigurable System-on-Chip (SoC) devices offer combining software with application-specific hardware accelerators to speed up applications. However, by mixing user software and user hardware, principal programming abstractions and system-software ...
