Hydraulic energy is a key component of the global energy mix, yet there exists no practical way of harvesting it at small scales, from flows with low Reynolds number. This has triggered a search for alternative hydroelectric conversion methodologies, leadi ...

Complexes of uranium in low oxidation state have shown the ability to activate non-reactive small molecules such as N-2. However, the multi-electron transfer required for such activation remains limited in uranium chemistry. Here, we review our recent rese ...

Electrochemical reactions involving electron/proton transfer occur in several technologically relevant environments, such as solar cells, energy conversion, and storage devices. In these systems, the electron/proton transfer is governed by the applied bias ...

The general scope of this thesis lies in the application of MOFs in photocatalysis. MOFs demonstrate inherent properties â such as high porosity, tunable optoelectronic and catalytic properties, which render them promising candidates for photocatalysis. ...

The development of concise, sustainable, and cost-effective synthesis of aryltetralin lignans, bearing either a fused lactone or cyclic ether, is of significant medicinal importance. Reported is that in the presence of Fukuzumi's acridinium salt under blue ...

The design, synthesis, fundamentals and evaluation of 2D/3D antimicrobial surfaces are addressed in detail in the current review. Recent advances in the antimicrobial mechanism, kinetics and properties of Ag, Cu and Ag-Cu surfaces in the dark and under lig ...

Semiconductor photocorrosion is a major challenge for the stability of photoelectrochemical water-splitting devices. Usually, photocorrosion is studied on the basis of thermodynamic aspects, by comparing the redox potentials of water to the self-decomposit ...

Shewanella oneidensis produces an extensive electron transfer network that results in metabolic flexibility. A large number of c-type cytochromes are expressed by S. oneidensis and these function as the fundamental electron transport chain proteins. Althou ...

The superweak tetrakis(nonafluoro-tert-butoxy)aluminate coordinating anion was employed to introduce pseudo-gas-phase conditions to the 2-[5-(1,3-dihydro-1,3,3-trimethyl-2H-indol-2-ylidene)-1,3-pentadien-1-yl]-1,3,3-trimethyl-3H-indolium chromophore. The r ...

Tetrachloroethene (PCE) pollution threatens nature and human health due to its toxic and carcinogenic potential. Due to industrial activities, large amounts of PCE were discharged into the environment over the last decades and represent one of major ground ...

Soft or “liquid-liquid” interfaces were functionalized by half a monolayer of mirror-like nanofilms of gold nanoparticles using a precise interfacial microinjection method. The surface coverage of the nanofilm was characterized by ion transfer voltammetry. ...

Dehalobacter restrictus strain PER-K23 (DSM 9455) is the type strain of the species Dehalobacter restrictus. D. restrictus strain PER-K23 grows by organohalide respiration, coupling the oxidation of H2 to the reductive dechlorination of tetra- or trichloro ...

Radicals play an important role in many areas of chemistry, such as atmospheric, aquatic, polymer, and biological, to name a few. Radicals are often highly reactive species which are short-lived and therefore harder to study by experimental techniques. In ...

Remediation of hydrocarbon contaminated soils can be performed both in situ and ex situ using chemical oxidants such as sodium persulfate. Standard methods for quantifying persulfate require either centrifugation or prolonged settling times. An optimized s ...

The approach of wastewater treatment has shifted towards a holistic view in order to achieve sustainability in addition to environmental protection. The aerobic granular sludge (AGS) technology, which relies on the use of fast-settling granular biofilms ca ...

Photosensitizers may convert molecular oxygen into reactive oxygen species (ROS) including, e.g., singlet oxygen (O-1(2)), superoxide anion (O-2(-center dot)), and hydroxyl radicals ((OH)-O-center dot), chemicals with extremely high cyto- and potential gen ...

Groundwater is essential for human activities and is sometimes referred to as a non-renewable resource in the same way as oil and gas. During the past century, precious groundwater reserves worldwide have been threatened by anthropogenic release of chemica ...

Graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) in the form of thin semitransparent film on F-doped SnO2 (FTO) exhibit high electrocatalytic activity for Co(L)(2); where L is 6-(1H-pyrazol-1-yl)-2,2'-bipyridine. The exchange current densities for the Co(2+/)3(+)(L)(2) redox ...

Electrochemical or photo-electrochemical reactions in both electrospray ionization and laser desorption ionization are discussed stressing the role of the electrode reaction in influencing the ionization process. In particular, upon application of a high v ...
