The design and discovery of potential novel materials is critical for the advancement of climate change mitigation technologies. In this respect, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have received considerable attention over the last two decades. The combinatio ...

Exploring a wide range of design options is crucial for every sound conceptual design process. In the conventional structural design workflow, optimization techniques are generally employed to generate well-performing design options. However, focusing only ...

Selection bias may arise when data have been chosen in a way that subsequent analysis does not account for. Such bias can arise in climate event attribution studies that are performed rapidly after a devastating "trigger event'', whose occurrence correspon ...

Statistical (machine-learning, ML) models are more and more often used in computational chemistry as a substitute to more expensive ab initio and parametrizable methods. While the ML algorithms are capable of learning physical laws implicitly from data, ad ...

The widespread application of machine learning (ML) to the chemical sciences is making it very important to understand how the ML models learn to correlate chemical structures with their properties, and what can be done to improve the training efficiency w ...

Despite scientific and technological advances in the field of assistive technology (AT) for people with visual impairment (VI), technological designs are frequently based on a poor understanding of the physical and social context of use, resulting in devic ...

Fiber reinforced polymer confined-recycled aggregate concrete filled steel tube (FRP-RACFST) not only proposes excellent load-bearing capacity and corrosion resistance, but is also an environmentally friendly structure due to the incorporation of recycled ...

Exploring a wide range of relevant design options from the outset is crucial for every sound conceptual design process. Optimization techniques are generally employed to generate well-performing structural design options. However, focusing only on performa ...

This dataset contains images (TIFF image data) of brain juvenile rats Wistar Han (P14) scanned immunostained slides by using an automated slide scanner (Olympus, VS120-L100, GER) equipped with a UPLSAPO 20x/0.75 air objective (Olympus, GER) and a Pike F5 ...

Driven by the rising popularity of chatbots such as ChatGPT, there is a budding line of research proposing guidelines for chatbot design, both in general and specifically for digital education. Nevertheless, few researchers have focused on providing concep ...

Purpose: In this work, we present a new machine learning method based on the transformer neural network to detect eye rubbing using a smartwatch in a real-life setting. In ophthalmology, the accurate detection and prevention of eye rubbing could reduce inc ...

This paper presents the cooling concept for a medium voltage modular multilevel converter cell. To optimize power density, the metallic enclosure is used to dissipate the heat generated by semiconductor losses, while maintaining maximum temperatures below ...

A review is given on the highlights of a scatter-shot approach of developing machine-learning methods and artificial neural networks based fast predictors for the application to fusion exhaust. The aim is to enable and facilitate optimized and improved mod ...

The field of text-to-video retrieval has advanced significantly with the evolution of language models and large-scale pre-training on generated caption-video pairs. Current methods predominantly focus on visual and event-based details, making retrieval lar ...

We study socio-political systems in representative democracies. Motivated by problems that affect the proper functioning of the system, we build computational methods to answer research questions regarding the phenomena occurring in them. For each phenomen ...

Structural systems are a significant contributor to buildings’ embodied carbon and reusing structural elements in new load-bearing applications is one strategy to reduce this impact. However, integrating this approach into existing design workflows without ...

We propose an interpretable model to score the subjective bias present in documents, based only on their textual content. Our model is trained on pairs of revisions of the same Wikipedia article, where one version is more biased than the other. Although pr ...

High-entropy alloys (HEAs), containing several metallic elements in near-equimolar proportions, have long been of interest for their unique mechanical properties. More recently, they have emerged as a promising platform for the development of novel heterog ...
