Arsenic (As) is a toxic metalloid that occurs naturally and is widely distributed in the environment. The inorganic compounds arsenite (As(III)) and arsenate (As(V)) are the most prevalent As species in the biosphere, the former being predominant in reduci ...

Anoxic microsites, zones of oxygen depletion in otherwise well-aerated soils, serve as prominent controls on several biogeochemical cycles (e.g., carbon, nitrogen, iron). However, relatively little is known about the spatiotemporal distribution of anoxic m ...

Context. Imaging in radio interferometry requires solving an ill-posed noisy inverse problem, for which the most adopted algorithm is the original CLEAN algorithm and its variants. Alternative explicit optimization methods have gained increasing attention, ...

Most codes of practice adopt a semi probabilistic design approach for the dimensioning and assessment of structures. Accordingly, structural safety is ensured by performing limit state verifications using design values determined with adequately calibrated ...

Stable water isotopes (SWIs) contain valuable information on the past climate and phase changes in the hydrologic cycle. Recently, vapor measurements in the polar regions have provided new insights into the effects of snow-related and atmospheric processes ...

Clouds are omnipresent in the Earth's atmosphere. Their phase composition significantly modulates their interaction with solar and terrestrial radiation, as well as precipitation formation. Particularly for clouds containing both phases, known as mixed-pha ...

High Damping Rubber Bearings (HDRBs) are widely used in seismic isolation of structures, and their force-deformation constitutive behavior controls the lateral structural response during an earthquake. However, given the many components and steps involved ...

The cold regions on Earth, such as the polar and high mountain regions, are snow covered for at least a part of the year. These snow-covered surfaces are highly dynamic, particularly under the influence of strong winds. The aeolian or wind-driven transport ...

Salt marshes are highly productive intertidal wetlands providing important ecological services for maintaining coastal biodiversity, buffering against oceanic storms, and acting as efficient carbon sinks. However, about half of these wetlands have been los ...

Modelling and analysis of biological systems is crucial in order to quantitatively explain and predict their behaviour. The importance of modelling in systems biology becomes even more evident when tackling complex, large systems. Approaches that rely on ...

The first observation of the suppressed semileptonic B-s(0) -> K-mu(+)nu(mu) decay is reported. Using a data sample recorded in pp collisions in 2012 with the LHCb detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2 fb(-1), the branching fraction B(B- ...

Recent cosmic shear studies have reported discrepancies of up to 1 sigma on the parameter S-8 = sigma(8) root Omega(m)/0.3 between the analysis of shear power spectra and two-point correlation functions, derived from the same shear catalogues. It is not a ...

Households represent a large share of flexibility on the demand side for assisting the smooth operation of the highly renewable grid. The stochastic nature of activities and various appliance usage patterns of household occupants affects the flexibility po ...

Enabling analysis of non-linear systems in linear form, the Koopman operator has been shown to be a powerful tool for system identification and controller design. However, current data-driven methods cannot provide quantification of model uncertainty given ...

Charmed hadron spectroscopy is a quickly progressing field that has enjoyed a growing interest in recent years from both theorist and experimentalists. Open-charmed hadrons consist of a heavy

Basis adaptation in Homogeneous Chaos spaces rely on a suitable rotation of the underlying Gaussian germ. Several rotations have been proposed in the literature resulting in adaptations with different convergence properties. In this paper we present a new ...

This work reports on the current status of the global modeling of iron (Fe) deposition fluxes and atmospheric concentrations and the analyses of the differences between models, as well as between models and observations. A total of four global 3-D chemistr ...

A rainfall manipulation experiment was conducted over a two-year period on two semi-natural grassland sites, in order to determine the effects of drought on both forage production (dry matter and nutritive value) and plant-soil relationships. Water stress ...
