Large Eddy Simulations (LES) of atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) flow with the actuator disc (AD) for turbine modelling is a widely used method of simulating wind farm flows. Hence, it is important to understand the requirements for achieving a good compar ...

We introduce the elliptical Ornstein-Uhlenbeck (OU) process, which is a generalisation of the well-known univariate OU process to bivariate time series. This process maps out elliptical stochastic oscillations over time in the complex plane, which are obse ...

Solid-state qubits can be implemented with electrostatically confined quantum dots in semiconductors, allowing gate voltages to independently control the electrochemical potentials of each quantum dot. Quantum dots offer high levels of reliability and scal ...

Synaptic plasticity underlies our ability to learn and adapt to the constantly changing environment. The phenomenon of synapses changing their efficacy in an activity-dependent manner is often studied in small groups of neurons in vitro or indirectly throu ...

In this paper we present the Open Software Services for Classrooms and Research (OSSCAR) platform. OSSCAR provides an open collaborative environment to develop and access educational resources in the form of web applications, for which various deployment m ...

This spreading of prion proteins is at the basis of brain neurodegeneration. This paper deals with the numerical modelling of the misfolding process of a-synuclein in Parkinson's disease. We introduce and analyse a discontinuous Galerkin method for the sem ...

In the Large Hadron Collider, the beam losses are continuously measured for machine protection. By design, most of the particle losses occur in the collimation system, where the particles with high oscilla-tion amplitudes or large momentum error are scrape ...

Ideal magnetic frustration forms the basis for the emergence of exotic quantum spin states that are entirely nonmagnetic. Such singlet spin states are the defining feature of the Shastry-Sutherland model, and of its faithful materials realization in the qu ...

In this work, we investigate the intrinsic cycle-to-cycle variations in a spiking temperature-sensitive neuron, based on the resistive switching of a Vanadium dioxide (VO2) two-terminal device. We study how this phenomenon impacts the spike rate jitter, an ...

Semiconductor nanowires (NWs) in horizontal configuration could provide a path for scalable NW-based devices. Bottom-up large-scale manufacturing of these nanostructures by selective area epitaxy (SAE) relies on precise nanopatterning of various shapes on ...

Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) training can be difficult due to vanishing and exploding gradients during weight optimization through backpropagation. To address this problem, we propose a general class of Hamiltonian DNNs (H-DNNs) that stem from the discretiz ...

Humans and animals constantly adapt to their environment over the course of their life. This thesis seeks to integrate various timescales of adaptation, ranging from the adaptation of synaptic connections between spiking neurons (milliseconds), rapid behav ...

Identification of the most stable structure(s) of a system is a prerequisite for the calculation of any of its properties from first-principles. However, even for relatively small molecules, exhaustive explorations of the potential energy surface (PES) are ...

The way biological brains carry out advanced yet extremely energy efficient signal processing remains both fascinating and unintelligible. It is known however that at least some areas of the brain perform fast and low-cost processing relying only on a smal ...

In this paper, we set the mathematical foundations of the Dynamical Low-Rank Approximation (DLRA) method for stochastic differential equations (SDEs). DLRA aims at approximating the solution as a linear combination of a small number of basis vectors with r ...

We consider the problem of nonparametric estimation of the drift and diffusion coefficients of a Stochastic Differential Equation (SDE), based on n independent replicates {Xi(t) : t is an element of [0 , 1]}13 d B(t), where alpha is an element of {0 , 1} a ...

We consider the defocusing nonlinear wave equation ❑u D jujp ⠀1u in R3 ⠂ & UOELIG;0; 1/. We prove that for any initial datum with a scaling-subcritical norm bounded by M0 the equation is globally well-posed for p D 5 C i, where i 2 .0; ...

Using a variational method, we prove the existence of heteroclinic solutions for a 6-dimensional system of ordinary differential equations. We derive this system from the classical Benard-Rayleigh problem near the convective instability threshold. The cons ...

The finite element method is a well-established method for the numerical solution of partial differential equations (PDEs), both linear and nonlinear. However, the repeated re -assemblage of finite element matrices for nonlinear PDEs is frequently pointed ...
