Macroscopic fundamental diagrams (MFDs) have been widely adopted to model the traffic flow of large-scale urban networks. Coupling perimeter control and regional route guidance (PCRG) is a promising strategy to decrease congestion heterogeneity and reduce ...

Microscopic traffic flow models can be distinguished in lane-based or lane-free depending on the degree of lane-discipline. This distinction holds true only if motorcycles are neglected in lane-based traffic. In cities, as opposed to highways, this is an o ...

A vehicle's steering is a particular system in that it is exposed to individual subjective reviews based on criteria that are hard to assess quantitatively. Haptic design of such systems is a prime concern that has been at the center of industrial developm ...

Traffic congestion constitutes one of the most frequent, yet challenging, problems to address in the urban space. Caused by the concentration of population, whose mobility needs surpass the serving capacity of urban networks, congestion cannot be resolved ...

This research is the result of four years of practical and scientific investigation of the phenomenon of traffic evaporation, which was considered and then demonstrated to be the opposite of traffic induction. It has anchored, in practice and in time, an o ...

When designed and operated adequately, natural ventilation (NV) can improve the buildings' energy efficiency and indoor environmental quality. There is a plethora of factors that limit the effectiveness of NV, such as the climate, surrounding buildings, no ...

Forecasting pedestrians' future motions is essential for autonomous driving systems to safely navigate in urban areas. However, existing prediction algorithms often overly rely on past observed trajectories and tend to fail around abrupt dynamic changes, s ...

Decentralized signal control of congested traffic networks based on the Max-Pressure (MP) controller is theoretically proven to maximize throughput, stabilize the system and balance queues for single intersections under specific conditions. However, its pe ...

Traffic congestion in large urban networks may take different shapes and propagates non-uniformly variations from day to day. Given the fact that congestion on a road segment is spatially correlated to adjacent roads and propagates spatiotemporally with fi ...

Modeling urban traffic on the level of network is a wide research area oriented to the development of ITS. In this thesis properties of models based on MFD (Macroscopic Fundamental Diagram) are studied. The idea behind MFD is to say that the state of the t ...

Traffic control for large-scale urban road networks remains a challenging problem. Aggregated dynamical models of city-scale traffic, based on the macroscopic fundamental diagram (MFD), enable development of model-based perimeter control methods. Involving ...

This paper proposes an integrated methodological framework to design a spatially heterogeneous bus route network and time-dependent service headways to serve travel demand that varies over time and space. Travelers choose to use either the transit mode or ...

Traffic management for large-scale urban road networks remains a challenging problem. Aggregated dynamical models of city-scale traffic, based on the macroscopic fundamental diagram (MFD), enable development of model-based control schemes for use with the ...

In this thesis, we developed a research direction that combines the theoretical concepts of complex networks with practical needs and applications in the field of transportation engineering. As a first objective we analyzed the phenomenon of congestion pr ...

Recently, an open-data initiative was announced with one of the most complete datasets to study urban congestion. The pNEUMA dataset consists of more than half a million trajectories in heterogeneous traffic. In order to utilize the dataset for macroscopic ...

Transit priority based in exclusive right-of-way is a low-cost way of improving transit service by minimizing delays caused by interaction with other vehicles. This effect can increase the share of public transit against private cars in the mode preference ...

Urbanization intensifies as a global trend, exposing transportation networks to ever increasing levels of congestion. As network usage increases with available infrastructure, building new roads is not a solution. Design of intelligent transportation syste ...

In the era of big data, new transportation-related concepts and methodologies need to be proposed for understanding how congestion propagates. pNEUMA, a unique dataset that was acquired during a first-of-its-kind experiment with a swarm of drones over a de ...

Network-level road traffic control remains a challenging problem. Macroscopic fundamental diagram (MFD) based dynamical models of large-scale urban networks enable development of model predictive perimeter control methods, which represent an efficient cong ...

Driving is a very challenging task to automatize despite how naturally and efficiently it may come to experienced human drivers. The complexity stems from the need to (i) understand the surrounding context and forecast how it is likely to evolve, (ii) plan ...
