Online performance characterization and faulty condition diagnosis of micro-combined-heat-and-power (μ-CHP) solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) system is crucial for ensuring safe in-house operation and lifespan prolongation. However, fast accurate detection of f ...

Hydrogen, known for its high energy content and clean combustion, is promising in the energy transition. This study explores the environmental impact of a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) system. 1 kg of hydrogen production at 1 bar serves as the functional un ...

The present work reports a simple approach to manufacture electrocatalytically active gas diffusion electrodes (GDEs) in two steps: (i) inkjet printing and (ii) flash light irradiation from a xenon flash lamp, a process called Print-light-synthesis (PLS). ...

This work aims to develop a scalable surrogate modelling framework for robust multidisciplinary design optimisation (RMDO) in complex engineering systems. Focusing on gas-bearing supported rotors, it addresses the need to maintain system performance under ...

For robots to operate in unstructured environments, they are required to interact with objects through contact. Those contacts may be used to push objects to the side, deform objects, or manipulate objects in-hand. This thesis addresses the problem of cont ...

A shortcut model is a low-order model that provides a simplified representation of a complex process, thereby enabling faster and more efficient analysis, design and optimization without the computational intensity of a full-scale model. For continuous dis ...

In this work, we develop first-order (Hessian-free) and zeroth-order (derivative-free) implementations of the Cubically Regularized Newton Method for solving general non-convex optimization problems. For that, we employ finite difference approximations of ...

The current restrictions on the registration of combustion engines in different countries and the harmful impacts of fossil fuels on the environment and human health have motivated decision-makers to use batteries and/or fuel cells as alternatives for comb ...

A reversible photo-electrochemical device operating under concentrated irradiation could offer a stand-alone solution for producing solar fuel (in photo-driven electrolysis mode) and power (in fuel cell mode). This strategy would present the advantage of h ...

Abstract The degradation of metal interconnects (ICs) in Solid Oxide Cells (SOCs) primarily results from chromium (Cr) oxide scale growth on stainless-steel substrates, causing ohmic loss and air-side electrode poisoning by Cr. This thesis addresses these ...

Anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) offers a green hydrogen production method that eliminates the need for platinum group metals (PGM) as electrocatalysts. This study employs a COMSOL (R) 6.0 model to simulate a 1x1 cm(2) Ni fibre - Raney (R ...

Modern optimization is tasked with handling applications of increasingly large scale, chiefly due to the massive amounts of widely available data and the ever-growing reach of Machine Learning. Consequently, this area of research is under steady pressure t ...

In this paper, we present a new parameterization and optimization procedure for minimizing the weight of ribbed plates. The primary goal is to reduce embodied CO2 in concrete floors as part of the effort to diminish the carbon footprint of the construction ...

We develop new tools to study landscapes in nonconvex optimization. Given one optimization problem, we pair it with another by smoothly parametrizing the domain. This is either for practical purposes (e.g., to use smooth optimization algorithms with good g ...

A method for optimizing at least one of a geometry, an implantation procedure, and/or stimulation protocol of one or more electrodes for an electrical stimulation of a target structure in a nervous system of a living being by a computer device, the method ...

We formulate computed-tomography reconstruction as a continuous-domain optimization problem with Hessian total variation (HTV) as the regularizer. HTV is a sparsity-promoting regularizer that favors continuous and piecewise-linear functions with few affine ...

A gas diffusion electrode (GDE) based CO2 electrolyzer shows enhanced CO2 transport to the catalyst surface, significantly increasing current density compared to traditional planar immersed electrodes. A two-dimensional model for the cathode side of a micr ...

Orthogonal group synchronization is the problem of estimating n elements Z(1),& mldr;,Z(n) from the rxr orthogonal group given some relative measurements R-ij approximate to Z(i)Z(j)(-1). The least-squares formulation is nonconvex. To avoid its local minim ...

Distributed learning is the key for enabling training of modern large-scale machine learning models, through parallelising the learning process. Collaborative learning is essential for learning from privacy-sensitive data that is distributed across various ...

The shipping industry was responsible for about 3% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in 2018. In this context, the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) has established stringent targets to reduce GHG emissions by at least 50% by 2050 compared t ...
