Tire wear particles, released at an estimated 6 million tons annually worldwide, introduce various chemical substances into agricultural environments through atmospheric deposition, road runoff, and reclaimed wastewater. These tire-derived compounds are kn ...

Uncertainty of spillover effects – including property devaluation - from proposed land-use change elicits opposition to local development. This hinders cities’ ability to implement land-use policy aimed at housing affordability and environmental sustainabi ...

Tire and road wear particles (TRWP) resulting from tire abrasion while driving raise concerns due to their potential contribution to aquatic toxicity. Our study aimed to assess cryogenically milled tire tread (CMTT) particle toxicity, used as a proxy for T ...

Lakes are a fundamental feature of nature with brilliance, profoundness and complexity. Various of physical, chemical and biological changes take place three dimensionally in deep lakes, regulated by complicated boundary conditions. To understand and predi ...

University chemical laboratories, contrary to common perception, are dangerous working environments. Unlike industry, where most processes are standardized, in academia, they are modified so frequently that in-depth and detailed risk assessment becomes unf ...

Severe thunderstorms can have devastating impacts. Concurrently high values of convective available potential energy (CAPE) and storm relative helicity (SRH) are known to be conducive to severe weather, so high values of PROD - (CAPE)(1/2) x SRH have been ...

In this study, we investigated an interdisciplinary project-based learning program. Students were confronted with interdisciplinary challenges in the form of complex and authentic problems, like building a racing car or making a mobile laboratory for genet ...

Concern about the increasingly high-probability, high-impact risks posed by global warming is driving the exploration of new techniques to artificially cool the planet through an approach known as solar radiation modification (SRM). Would the world be bett ...

High-resolution lake and reservoir bathymetric surveys can pinpoint locations that may experience underwater landslides (subaquatic sedimentary mass movements). These can pose a risk to underwater and shoreline infrastructure. This paper outlines an approa ...

Millions of people engage in mountain sports activities worldwide. Although leisure-time physical activity is associated with significant health benefits, mountain sports activities also bear an inherent risk for injury and death. However, death risk may v ...

Infrastructure (asset) risk management is essential for a resilient environment. Several industries are concerned to improve their building asset preparedness subject to seismic hazard. To this end, the development of software tools that quantify and asses ...

Background: It is still unknown which types of nanomaterials and associated doses represent an actual danger to humans and environment. Meanwhile, there is consensus on applying the precautionary principle to these novel materials until more information is ...

The key to extending the service life of a historical masonry bridge is an accurate examination of its actual performance. This paper presents a risk-based safety approach which introduces a risk matrix illustrating the risk presented by a structure as a f ...

The fish early-life stage (FELS) test (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development [OECD] test guideline 210) is the primary test used internationally to estimate chronic fish toxicity in support of ecological risk assessments and chemical manag ...

Cell-based models are important for deriving mechanistic information about stress response pathways that have evolved to protect cells from toxic insult, such as exposure to environmental pollutants. One determinant of the stress response is the amount of ...

Background, aim and scope In 2005, a comprehensive comparison of life cycle impact assessment toxicity characterisation models was initiated by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP)-Society for Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) Life Cy ...

The use of pesticides may lead to environmental problems, such as surface water pollution, with a risk for aquatic organisms. In the present study, a typical vineyard river of western Switzerland was first monitored to measure discharged loads, identify so ...

The aims of the preliminary study reported in this document were twofold. Firstly, within the context of the application of UHPFRC for the rehabilitation of reinforced concrete structures, to identify the phenomena that require further study with respect t ...

There is a need for a risk analysis technique specific for academic research laboratories. Since accurate accident data, normally required for quantitative risk analysis, are not available for this environment, expert judgements are often used to describe ...

This thesis considers technological risks and their constitution as public problems. It supports that the main difference among risks is not to see between proved risks and uncertain risks, on the basis of the objective knowledge, but rather separates risk ...
