A search for the rare eta -> mu(+)mu(-)mu(+)mu(-) double-Dalitz decay is performed using a sample of proton-proton collisions, collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC with high-rate muon triggers during 2017 and 2018 and corresponding to an integra ...

Crossing properties of soil saturation, defined as the duration and excursion of soil saturation below and above certain thresholds, are key variables to ecosystem functioning and evolution by primarily influencing the plant and soil microbes physiological ...

Increasing severity and frequency of drought is predicted for large portions of the terrestrial biosphere, with major impacts already documented in wet tropical forests. Using a 4-year rainfall exclusion experiment in the Daintree Rainforest in northeast A ...

The use of medicinal plants as a therapy alternative is old as human existence itself. Nowadays, the search for effective molecules for chronic diseases treatments has increased. The cardiometabolic disorders still the main cause of death worldwide and pla ...

Plants and microbes release a plethora of volatiles that act as signals in plant-microbe interactions. Characterizing soil's volatilome and microbiome might shed light on the nature of relevant volatile signals and on their emitters. This hypothesis was te ...

A rainfall manipulation experiment was conducted over a two-year period on two semi-natural grassland sites, in order to determine the effects of drought on both forage production (dry matter and nutritive value) and plant-soil relationships. Water stress ...

Drought induces changes in the nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) cycle but most plant species have limited flexibility to take up nutrients under such variable or unbalanced N and P availability. Both the degree of flexibility in plant N:P ratio and of ro ...

The interference between Cabibbo-favored and Cabibbo-suppressed B -> D pi decay amplitudes provides sensitivity to the CKM angle gamma. The relative size of the interfering amplitudes is an important ingredient in the determination of gamma. Using branchin ...

QuestionA better understanding of the response of Sphagnum mosses and associated vascular plants to climate warming is relevant for predicting the carbon balance of peatlands in a warmer world. Open-top chambers (OTCs) have been used to investigate the eff ...

Although reactive oxygen species (ROS) are an inescapable part of every living organism, we are only beginning to understand their functions and mechanics. As of now, we know that ROS are involved in cell signalling, stress-response and defence against pat ...

The uptake of cadmium (Cd) was analyzed for six different perennial plant species growing in a wooded pasture of the Swiss Jura Mountains, where the soils are geogenically enriched in Cd (4.58 mg.kg(-1) on average (n = 36); maximal value: 16.3 mg.kg(-1)). ...

The success of seedlings and rejuvenated woody debris growing on river bedforms depends on the resistance to uprooting by flow provided by their simple root architecture. Avena sativa and Medicago sativa seedlings were used in flume experiments as prototyp ...

Remediation of hydrocarbon contaminated soils can be performed both in situ and ex situ using chemical oxidants such as sodium persulfate. Standard methods for quantifying persulfate require either centrifugation or prolonged settling times. An optimized s ...

Sunflower mutant lines with an enhanced tolerance and metal accumulation capacity obtained by mutation breeding have been proposed for Zn, Cd and Cu removal from metal-contaminated soils in previous studies. However, soils contaminated with trace elements ...

The relevance of biodiversity to human health is an increasing international political issue as it causes concern for ethical and aesthetic reasons, but also has a strong impact on ecosystem properties and ecological goods and services utilised by humanity ...

Plant species diversity is hypothesized to be among the most relevant factors for enhancing soil stability in disturbed sites at high elevation. Because a more diverse plant community may comprise a high number of plant species of different growth forms, p ...

There is a duality in plant tolerance to pollutants and its response to the pollutants’ stress. On the one hand some plants, (hyper)tolerant to heavy metals, are able to hyperaccumulate these metals in shoots, which could be beneficial for phytoremediation ...

Background, aim and scope Sulphonated anthraquinones are precursors of many synthetic dyes and pigments, recalcitrant to biodegradation and thus not eliminated by classical wastewater treatments. In the development of a phytotreatment to remove sulphonated ...
