Creatine (Cr) is an important organic compound acting as intracellular high-energy phosphate shuttle and in energy storage. While located in most cells where it plays its main roles in energy metabolism and cytoprotection, Cr is highly concentrated in musc ...

Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) is a powerful tool when studying metabolism in intact and living organs preserving cells in their natural microenvironment with minimal external interference. The unique insights offered by the observation of metabolic ...

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the leading causes of cancer death worldwide. Gaining insight into the molecular pathways involved in the development of HCC is hence a prerequisite to design and develop novel and effective therapeutic strategies. ...

Haematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) differ from their committed progeny by relying primarily on anaerobic glycolysis rather than mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation for energy production. However, whether this change in the metabolic program is the cause ...

A new and efficient magnetisation transfer P-31 magnetic resonance fingerprinting (MT-P-31-MRF) approach is introduced to measure the creatine kinase metabolic rate kCK

between phosphocreatine (PCr) and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) i ...

ABCG2 is an ATP-binding cassette transporter that exports a wide range of xenobiotic compounds and has been recognized as a contributing factor for multidrug resistance in cancer cells. Substrate and inhibitor interactions with ABCG2 have been extensively ...

Skeletal muscle composed of myofibers and a small amount of muscle stem cells (MuSCs). It plays important roles in energy metabolism. Some of the key metabolites, such as NAD+ and acetyl-CoA were recently found to regulate muscle and MuSCs function. Most o ...

Assigning or proposing a catalysing enzyme given a chemical or biochemical reaction is of great interest to life sciences and chemistry alike. The exploration and design of metabolic pathways and the challenge of finding more sustainable enzyme-catalysed a ...

Converging experimental data indicate a neuroprotective action of L-Lactate. Using Digital Holographic Microscopy, we observe that transient application of glutamate (100 μM; 2 min) elicits a NMDA-dependent death in 65% of mouse cortical neurons in culture ...

Simple Summary The cytoplasm of a living cell is a crowded place, containing hundreds of types of protein and other macromolecules. Cells reliably and continually perform thousands of biochemical reactions to maintain their health. Biomolecular condensates ...

Glucose is the main energy substrate for the brain. There is now extensive evidence indicating that the metabolic profile of neural cells with regard to glucose utilization and glycolysis rate is not homogenous, with a marked propensity for glycolytic gluc ...

IntroductionDesulfitobacterium hafniense was isolated for its ability to use organohalogens as terminal electron acceptors via organohalide respiration (OHR). In contrast to obligate OHR bacteria, Desulfitobacterium spp. show a highly versatile energy meta ...

CAR-T cell therapy has shown remarkable success in treating hematopoietic malignancies, but its efficacy in solid tumors is limited by T cell dysfunction, including exhaustion and senescence. In this study, we designed metabolically armored CAR-T cells to ...

While altered metabolism is a well-established tumor cell trait, the specifics of metabolic rewiring during cancer development and progression are yet to be fully understood. The Warburg effect, or aerobic glycolysis, has been described in a wide array of ...

Brain energy consumption is high and a very tightly regulated energy metabolism ensures correct performance. Neurons, the cells responsible for transmitting information via synapses, interact very closely with star shaped glial cells called astrocytes. Ast ...

Glucose is the main energy substrate in the adult brain under normal conditions. Accumulating evidence, however, indicates that lactate produced in astrocytes (a type of glial cell) can also fuel neuronal activity. The quantitative aspects of this so-calle ...

Functional brain imaging studies show that in certain brain regions glucose utilization exceeds oxygen consumption, indicating the predominance of aerobic glycolysis. In this issue, Goyal et al. (2014) report that this metabolic profile is associated with ...
