Bone combines mechanical resilience with low density and the ability to repair itself when damaged. Inspired by the fascinating density-normalized mechanical properties of bone, synthetic porous hydroxyapatite (HA)-based materials have been introduced. However, their production typically involves sintering, which is energy-intensive and restricts incorporation of biologically active components. Here, we introduce an enzyme-mediated strategy to 3D print HA-based composites that become load-bearing within 7 d

Deviations from conventional hydraulic fracturing simulators’ predictions are sometimes observed in the field and laboratory. This questions the basic assumptions adopted in linear hydraulic fracture mechanics (LHFM): a linear elastic solid and a simplified fluid flow in the fracture. Some rocks encountered in the domain of hydraulic fracturing show a strong non-linear behavior with the existence of a process zone, and fluid flow in small rough apertures also presents a departure from the Poiseuille law. By

An analytical model based on global load sharing (GLS) theory is developed to guide design of fiber-reinforced hybrid composites with superior mechanical properties to single-fiber-type composites. The hybrid is assumed to comprise two types of fibers-low- ...

Steel tubular truss are lightweight, aesthetical and used in many different applications. These structures are sensitive to fatigue and specific verification methods have been developed for them, in particular by CIDECT [2001]. Due to assembly and welding, these structures contain large internal self-balanced stresses. Since tensile residual stresses tend to open cracks, they have a detrimental influence on the fatigue crack propagating under cyclic traffic loadings. Different studies on the behaviour of tu

A W-2Y material has been produced by powder metallurgy techniques including mechanical alloying of W and Y elemental powders in an argon atmosphere, followed by hot isostatic pressing of the milled powder at 1320 degrees C under a pressure of 200 MPa for 2 ...

Osteoporosis is one of the most common skeletal diseases that lead to an accelerated bone loss due to an imbalance in bone turnover. This low bone mass and degraded bone microarchitecture cause a reduction in mechanical properties and an associated increase in fracture risk. If individual trabeculae become more brittle with aging, disease, or drug treatment, how does that influence the strength of the overall trabecular bone? This multi-scale issue, which relates energy absorption or tissue ductility at one

Stress induced ferroelastic switching may represent an efficient toughening mechanism in piezoelectric-ferroelectric ceramics. During the crack propagation, the high tensional stresses at the crack tip can be partially released by the reorientation of 90 degree domains from along to perpendicular to the propagation direction. Compared to the phase transformation approach (inclusion of zirconia particles in the metastable tetragonal phase) this mechanism is not expected to reduce the piezoelectric properties

In bypass graft surgery, surgeons have turned to synthetic materials such as polyethylene terephthalate (Dacron) and expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) when lacking sufficient and suitable arteries or veins for the procedure. However, due to their low patency in small-caliber bypass surgery (

Structural stability issues in planar solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) arise from the mismatch between the coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE) of the components. The stress state at operating temperature is the superposition of several contributions, which differ depending on the component. First, the cells undergo residual stresses due to the sintering phase during the manufacturing process. Furthermore, the load applied during the assembly of the stack to ensure the electric contact and flatten the cells

Recent investigations of the tensile fracture behaviour of representative glassy and semicrystalline impact-resistant polymers are reviewed, with emphasis on the microdeformation behaviour as revealed by electron microscopy of sections from bulk specimens, where the crack-tip damage zone has been embedded and/or stained under load, and on thin films deformed in situ. The insight that such techniques have provided into the toughening mechanisms is discussed.

Phase contrast radiology using unmonochromatic synchrotron X-ray successfully imaged the grain boundaries of Al and AlZn alloy without contrast agent. Combining the high penetration of X-ray and the possibility of 3D reconstruction by tomorgraphy or stereography method, this approach can be very used for nondestructive characterization of polycrystalline materials. By examine the images with 3D perspective, we were able locate the observed void-like defects which lies exclusively on the grain boundary and i

The ball punch test technique was used to evaluate the conventional tensile and impact properties of the tempered martensitic steel EUROFER97 from room temperature down to liquid nitrogen temperature. The testing was carried out on unirradiated material only with small disks, 3 mm in diameter and 0.25 mm in thickness. For comparison, tensile tests were also performed over the same temperature range. Correlations between the load at the plastic bending initiation and the maximum load of the punch tests with

The microstructure and tensile behavior of pure single crystalline Ni irradiated with 590 MeV protons are investigated. First results have been obtained for a damage level of 0.13 dpa at room temperature and 0.002 dpa at 523 K. The irradiation induced defect microstructure observed under transmission electron microscopy consists of loops and stacking fault tetrahedra in a lower density. Tensile tests were performed at room temperature and show observable radiation induced hardening already at 0.002 dpa. Dis

We present oblique powder blasting as a three-dimensional micromachining technology for brittle materials. Powder blasting is a microfabrication process, based on the use of a pressurised air beam containing eroding Al2O3 particles. By varying the angle of incidence of the incoming particles to a substrate, covered by a mask, one can exploit the oblique slopes of micropatterned holes and mask underetching phenomena to generate new options for three-dimensional microstructuring. We have identified and quanti

After more than a quarter of a century of active research, metal matrix composites (MMCs), and more particularly aluminum matrix composites (AMCs), are beginning to make a significant contribution to aerospace, automotive, and electronic industrial practice. This is the consequence of progresses in the development of processing techniques, and the result of advances in the understanding of the relationship between composite structure and mechanical behavior In the present work, two kinds of AMCs were elabor

The moisture diffusivity is of considerable importance for quantitative assessments of creep and shrinkage as well as durability of cementitious material. For this reason, the influence of the composition of repair mortars on their effective moisture diffusivity as a function of the relative humidity of the surrounding air has been investigated. Silica fume, superplasticizer and polypropylene fibers have been added in order to reduce the permeability and to control cracking induced by drying shrinkage. It h
