The concept of post-tensioned glass beams builds on the concrete analogy of the reinforced glass beams. By additionally prestressing the reinforcement in a post-tensioned system, a compressive pre-stress is applied on the glass, enhancing the initial fract ...

The visual inspection of existing infrastructure is a critical step for asset management, as the detection and quantification of damage must be useful to prioritise maintenance. In Switzerland, main inspections are made every five years for all road bridge ...

Traditionally, the concrete strength is measured on cubes or cylinders having normalized dimensions, suitable vibration and curing conditions and their strength is assessed in laboratory under fast loading rates. However, the in-situ strength of structural ...

The safety verification of in-plane loaded masonry panels requires the evaluation of at least three different collapse conditions connected with overturning, shear sliding, and shear - compression failure at the panels' toe. In reinforced panels, the resis ...

In capacity-designed steel moment resisting frames (MRFs), column base connections feature a strong-base/weak-column design philosophy. Prior studies on fixed-end wide flange steel columns featuring seismically compact cross sections subjected to coupled a ...

Tensegrity structures have been widely utilized as lightweight structures due to their high stiffness-to-mass and strength-to-mass ratios. Minimal mass design of tensegrity structures subject to external loads and specific constraints (e.g., member yieldin ...

The compressive resistance of concrete in new structures is usually characterized on the basis of tests performed on concrete cylinders or cubes under relatively rapid loading conditions. Although efficient for material characterization, these tests do not ...

Load-bearing systems (structures) in buildings and infrastructure contribute to a significant share of adverse environmental impacts (EI) because of resource- and energy-intensive fabrication. A currently overlooked circular economy strategy to reduce EI i ...

From soda cans to space rockets, thin-walled cylindrical shells are abundant, offering exceptional load carrying capacity at relatively low weight. However, the actual load at which any shell buckles and collapses is very sensitive to imperceptible defects ...

Adaptive structures can modify their geometry and internal forces through sensing and mechanical actuation in order to maintain optimal performance under changing actions. Previous work has shown that well-conceived adaptive design strategies achieve subst ...

This article introduces an analytical model to compute the monotonic force–displacement response of in-plane loaded unreinforced brick masonry walls accounting for walls failing in shear or flexure. The masonry wall is modelled as elastic in compression wit ...

This article presents a new mechanical model for the non-linear force-displacement response of unreinforced masonry (URM) walls developing a flexural rocking mode including their displacement capacity. The model is based on the plane section hypothesis and ...
