There has been a considerable interest in developing stiff, strong, tough, and highly stretchable hydrogels in various fields of science and technology including biomedical and sensing applications. However, simultaneous optimization of stiffness, strength ...

We report the extraction of silicon via a carbothermal reduction process using a CO2 laser beam as a heat source. The surface of a mixture of silica and carbon black powder became brown after laser beam irradiation for a few tens of seconds, and clear peak ...

Pre-oxidation is often used before disinfection with chlorine to decrease the reactivity of the water matrix and mitigate the formation of regulated disinfection byproducts (DBPs). This study provides insights on the impact of oxidative pre-treatment with ...

A series of four drug release formulations based on 5-fluorouracil encapsulated into a chitosan-based matrix were prepared by in situ hydrogelation with 3,7-dimethyl-2,6-octadienal. The formulations were investigated from structural and morphological aspec ...

Many biological systems are composed of nanoscale structures having hydrophobic and hydrophilic groups adjacent to one another and in contact with aqueous electrolyte solution. The interaction of ions with such structures is of fundamental importance. Alth ...

Overprediction of fine-particle ammonium-sulfate molar ratios (R) by thermodynamic models is suggested as evidence for interactions with organic constituents that inhibit the equilibration of gas-phase ammonia with aerosol sulfate and questions the equilib ...

Partial molar volumes of ions in water solution are calculated through pressures obtained from ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. The correct definition of pressure in charged systems subject to periodic boundary conditions requires access to the va ...

The alkali-silica reaction causes long-term degradation in the microstructure of affected concrete as well as macroscopic expansion. In this paper, a micro-mechanical model based upon an explicit representation of the microstructure has been used to simula ...

This paper is the work of working group 2 of the RILEM TC 238-SCM. Its purpose is to review methods to estimate the degree of reaction of supplementary cementitious materials in blended (or composite) cement pastes. We do not consider explicitly the wider ...

Supramolecular rubbers incorporating a large number of physical cross-links through cooperative hydrogen bonds display high self-healing properties but limited solvent and creep resistance due to the lack of chemical cross-links. Increasing both chemical c ...

The application of hydrogels as load-bearing biomedical components is often limited by their mechanical properties. Often an attempt to improve a hydrogel's stiffness is accompanied by a loss of toughness and swelling properties. In this work, we show that ...

Ferroelectric orthorhombic lead metaniobate (PbNb2O6) is known to be metastable with respect to the thermodynamically stable nonferroelectric rhombohedral polymorph. The high-temperature tetragonal to low temperature rhombohedral phase transition is recons ...

Polyelectrolytes (PEL) and PEL complexes formed by electrostatic interaction are recognized as compounds with a remarkable potential for a wide field of applications. However, comprehensive knowledge about electrostatic and structural influences on the pol ...

Supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) are widely used to partially replace portland clinker in blended cements. Reducing clinker contents further without compromising the development of early strength necessitates a better assessment and enhancement ...

Aggregation of particles is fundamental for improving the performance of many solid/liquid processes. Aggregation can be induced by different means, and one of the most common is based on the addition of polymeric additives, namely polyelectrolytes. In thi ...

Bio synthetic natural gas (Bio-SNG) is being proposed as an alternative to the natural gas of fossil origin (NG) [1]. Bio-SNG consists mainly of CH4 (at least 95%mol), has a high heating value (e.g. 10 kWh/m3N), and respects the quality standards of the NG ...

Natural colloids are defined as macromolecules and nanoparticles with sizes ranging between 1 nm and 1 µm. Colloidal pool is complex "ill-defined" mixture of humic substances, exopolymeric substances (EPS), inorganic oxides, clays, etc. Aquatic colloids ha ...

We report on a series of soil erosion experiments performed on the 2-m x 6-m EPFL erosion flume. Total sediment concentrations and the concentrations of seven size fractions (1000 mm) were measured during 1 ...

Block copolymers are comprised of repeating chemical groups (blocks) which commonly contain at least one hydrophilic block coupled to at least one hydrophobic block, forming an amphipathic macromolecule. This molecular arrangement drives the self assembly ...
