We investigate the effect of pressure gradient on the cumulative wake of multiple turbines in wind tunnel experiments spanning across a range of adverse pressure gradient (APG), zero pressure gradient (ZPG), and favorable pressure gradient (FPG). Compared ...

Wind tunnel experiments are performed to investigate the effect of nacelle-to-rotor size on the wake of a wind turbine under different Reynolds numbers. Four different turbine configurations are tested, which vary in the rotor diameter and nacelle length a ...

Vertical-axis wind turbines are excellent candidates to diversify wind energy technology, but their aerodynamic complexity limits industrial deployment. To improve the efficiency and lifespan of vertical-axis wind turbines, we desire data-driven models and ...

Snow cornices growing on the leeward side of mountain ridges are common in alpine and polar regions during snow seasons. These structures may crack and fall, leading to an increase in avalanche danger. Although cornice formation has been observed in wind t ...

Wind turbines are very vulnerable to lightning because of their height, sharp edges and remote locations often with low soil conductivity. In this paper we present numerical simulations of the impedance of a typical wind turbine grounding geometry. We anal ...

The objective of this paper is to compare field data from a scanning lidar mounted on a turbine to control-oriented wind turbine wake models. The measurements were taken from the turbine nacelle looking downstream at the turbine wake. This field campaign w ...

The increasing use of renewable energy is a deep going trend mainly supported by the sustained annual growth rate of solar photovoltaic, wind power and biogases. The expansion and evolution of the distribution grids is therefore a key issue to ensure a sec ...

Regardless of the evolution of wind energy harvesting, the way in which turbines obtain in-situ meteorological information remains the same - i.e. using traditional wind vanes and cup anemometers installed at the turbine's nacelle, right behind the blades. ...

The near wake of wind turbines is characterized by the presence of the hub vortex, which is a coherent vorticity structure generated from the interaction between the root vortices and the boundary layer evolving over the turbine nacelle. Bymoving downstrea ...

Wind farm power production is known to be strongly affected by turbine wake effects. The purpose of this study is to develop and test a new analytical model for the prediction of wind turbine wakes and the associated power losses in wind farms. The new mod ...

Small scale hydropower is emerging as a decentralized source to satisfy local demand for electricity. The interest in micro-hydropower, which refers to installed power below 100 kW, is increasing since this is a solution with low environmental impact. Wate ...

A modeling framework is proposed and validated to simulate turbine wakes and associated power losses in wind farms. It combines the large-eddy simulation (LES) technique with blade element theory and a turbine-model-specific relationship between shaft torq ...

Dynamics and instabilities occurring in the near-wake of wind turbines have a crucial role for the wake downstream evolution, and for the onset of far-wake instabilities. Furthermore, wake dynamics significantly affect the intra-wind farm wake flow, wake i ...

The progressive integration of renewable energy sources such as wind turbines and photovoltaic pannels in the current electrical network, and the rise of the electrical mobility, provoke a change of paradigm in the sector of energy management. The increasi ...

Integrating renewable energy into standalone Internal Combustion Generator (ICG) systems is an economical and eco-friendly option. However, previous studies demonstrate the difficulties in replacing the ICGs completely by using Solar PV (SPV) and wind ener ...

In this study, large-eddy simulation is used to investigate the influence of atmospheric stability on wind-turbine wakes. In the simulations, tuning-free Lagrangian scale-dependent dynamic models are used to model the subgrid-scale turbulent fluxes, while ...

Wind tunnel measurements were performed for the wake produced by a three-bladed wind turbine immersed in uniform flow. These tests show the presence of a vorticity structure in the near-wake region mainly oriented along the streamwise direction, which is d ...

Accurate prediction of atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) flow and its interactions with wind turbines is of great importance for optimizing the design and efficiency of wind farms. This study first focuses on recent efforts to develop and validate a large-e ...
