Tire wear particles, released at an estimated 6 million tons annually worldwide, introduce various chemical substances into agricultural environments through atmospheric deposition, road runoff, and reclaimed wastewater. These tire-derived compounds are kn ...

Cethyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTMA) is one of the most used quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) in consumer products. CTMA and other QACs are only partially eliminated in municipal wastewater treatment and they can interact with bacteria in biological ...

Phosphorus (P) is an essential element to all living beings but also a finite resource. P-related problems center around broken P cycles from local to global scales. This paper presents outcomes from the 9th International Phosphorus Workshop (IPW9) held 20 ...

An important requirement of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is compliance with the local regulations on effluent discharge, which are going to become more stringent in the future. The operation of WWTPs exhibits a trade-off between operational cost and ...

Due to the development in science field which gives not only benefit but also introducesundesirable pollution to the environment. This pollution is due to poor discharge activities of industrial effluents into the soil and water bodies, surface run off fro ...

Graphitic carbon nitride, g-C3N4, have been receiving intense attention the last decades due to its unique physicochemical properties, and even more importantly, due to the visible light driven photoreactivity. Hence, the design and synthesis of novel phot ...

Wastewater treatment and sludge disposal are responsible for considerable costs and emissions in a global scale. With population and urbanization growing, tackling the rational and efficient use of energy while fulfilling the desired effluent standards are ...

Ozonation and subsequent post-treatments are increasingly implemented in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) for enhanced micropollutant abatement. While this technology is effective, micro pollutant oxidation leads to the formation of ozonation transforma ...

Chemical oxidants have been applied in water treatment for more than a century, first as disinfectants and later to abate inorganic and organic contaminants. The challenge of oxidative abatement of organic micropollutants is the formation of transformation ...

Fuel cell and hydrogen technologies are re-gaining momentum in a number of sectors including industrial, tertiary and residential ones. Integrated biogas fuel cell plants in wastewater treatment plants and other bioenergy recovery plants are nowadays on th ...

The photo-Fenton process is a promising emerging technology for the treatment of contaminated water streams. It is based on the generation of reactive oxygen species that are capable of destroying recalcitrant contaminants otherwise unaffected by conventio ...

Synthetic glucocorticoids (GCs) are widely used anti-inflammatory drugs. They mimic cortisol, the natural stress hormone in humans and in fish. Cortisol binds and activates the glucocorticoid receptor (GR), which regulates genes governing development, immu ...

This study evaluates the use of the Fe(III)-EDDS complexing agent as an alternative to conventional acidic pH photo-Fenton for the treatment of the pesticide imidacloprid in natural water. The main objective is to estimate whether Fe(III)-EDDS is a viable ...

In this study, the spatial extent of a wastewater-influenced water mass originating from a wastewater treatment plant outlet in Vidy Bay (Lake Geneva) was monitored by two manned submersibles from June to August 2011. The main goal was to assess whether mi ...

Disinfection by low-pressure monochromatic ultraviolet (UVC) radiation (253.7 nm) became an important technique to sanitize drinking water and also wastewater in tertiary treatments. In order to prevent the transmission of waterborne viral diseases, the an ...

Invisible to the human eye, yet ubiquitous... The occurrence and the potential adverse effects of micropollutants in the environment are uncontested. Due to incomplete removal by conventional wastewater treatment technologies, the aquatic environment is co ...

Wastewater reuse in agriculture is a widespread practice in developing countries, especially in urban areas where water shortage and poverty encourage people to use that marginal resource. Raw or treated wastewaters are used by farmers, but even treated wa ...

An analytical method for the quantification of the widely used herbicide, glyphosate, its main by-product, aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) and the herbicide glufosinate at trace level was developed and tested in different aqueous matrices. Their derivati ...

The approach of wastewater treatment has shifted towards a holistic view in order to achieve sustainability in addition to environmental protection. The aerobic granular sludge (AGS) technology, which relies on the use of fast-settling granular biofilms ca ...

Testing of critical PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) programs remains a challenging task for control system engineers as it can rarely be automated. This paper proposes a model-based approach which uses the BIP (Behavior, Interactions and Priorities) fr ...
