The electrification of the transport sector is a key element in decarbonizing our societies. However, energy systems will have to cope with additional electricity demand due to the charging needs of electric vehicles (EVs) together with the integration of ...

Organic solvents are ubiquitous in industrial and domestic applications from the production of pharmaceuticals to household consumer products. The negative impact of most traditional solvents, especially aprotic types, on the environment, health, and safet ...

The current study performs the thermodynamic and life-cycle assessments (LCA) of a novel charging station in two system designs. The goal is to design an efficient charging station for electric vehicles with high efficiencies and low environmental impacts ...

The depletion of fossil fuel sources has encouraged the authorities to use renewable resources such as wind energy to generate electricity. A backup/storage system can improve the performance of wind turbines, due to fluctuations in power demand. The novel ...

In this thesis we address various factors that contribute both theoretically and practically to mitigating supply demand mismatches. The thesis is composed of three chapters, where each chapter is an independent scientific paper. In the first paper, we dev ...

In this article, we consider decentralized optimization problems where agents have individual cost functions to minimize subject to subspace constraints that require the minimizers across the network to lie in low-dimensional subspaces. This constrained fo ...

Objective. Bioelectronic medicine is an emerging field that aims at developing closed-loop neuromodulation protocols for the autonomic nervous system (ANS) to treat a wide range of disorders. When designing a closed-loop protocol for real time modulation o ...

The last few years have experienced the emergence of Industry 4.0 (I4.0), ultra-customization, and the explosion of demand for ethical, fair trade, and sustainable consumption. Organizations have therefore started a digital transformation of their SCs and ...

European energy policies are aimed at increasing the climate resilience of infrastructure, including new and existing buildings. The implications of future ambient conditions on the energy and environmental performance in buildings and respective adaptatio ...

Adaptive structures modify their geometry and internal forces through sensing and mechanical actuation in order to maintain optimal performance under changing actions. Previous work has shown that well-conceived adaptive design strategies achieve substanti ...

Modern datacenters need to tackle efficiently the increasing demand for computing resources while minimizing energy usage and monetary costs. Power market operators have recently introduced emerging demand-response programs, in which electricity consumers ...

This thesis develops three models that study the motivation of various agents to take on debt, and the impact that excessive financial leverage can have on social welfare. In the chapter "Short-term Bank Leverage and the Value of Liquid Reserves", the ince ...

This study presents a comprehensive analysis on the energy demand and supply of typical European city centers for present time and 2050 horizon according to the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC) climatic scenario A1B. Building and urban arc ...

This paper is a contribution to assessing the Swiss energy transition, with an emphasis on the consequences of decommissioning the nuclear power plants for the electricity market and the whole economy. We expect that increased renewable generation and dema ...

There still exists a large gap between simulation work and industrial applications in the context of control and optimization of solid-oxide fuel-cell (SOFC) systems. In an effort to bridge this gap, this study describes the experimental implementation of ...

Adaptive structures are sensed and actuated to modify internal forces and shape to maintain optimal performance in response to loads. The use of large shape changes as a structural adaptation strategy to counteract the effect of loads has been investigated ...

The stringent requirement of the demand-supply equilibrium for delivering electricity has traditionally been dealt with a supply-side perspective, assuming that the demand is not alterable. With the promises of the Smart Grid, demand- side management techn ...

Uncertainty levels in forecasting of renewable generation and demand are known to affect the amount of reserve required to operate the power grid with a given level of reliability. In this paper, we quantify the effects on the system reserve and reliabilit ...

The incessant growth in energy demand has resulted in the deployment of renewable energy generators to reduce the impact of fossil fuel dependence. However, these generators often suffer from intermittency and require energy storage when there is over-gene ...

This paper presents an approach to provide demand response services with buildings. Each building receives a normalized signal that tells it to increase or decrease its power demand, and the building is free to implement any suitable strategy to follow the ...
