Improvement of interferometric measurements on far-infrared polarimeter interferometer systems

Résumé

On many tokamaks the reconstruction of the magnetic field structure in the plasma is supported by polarimetric measurements. Recent proposed and realized methods are based on a far-infrared laser beam with a rotating polarization ellipse. The same instrument usually performs as an interferometer measuring the line integrated plasma density. It has been shown that the rotating polarization ellipse disturbs the interferometric measurements. A method based on the principle of a rotating polarization in which the interferometric measurement is unaffected is proposed. Bench test results are presented which show the feasibility of this method. (C) 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Polarisation (optique)

La polarisation est une propriété qu'ont les ondes vectorielles (ondes qui peuvent osciller selon plus d'une orientation) de présenter une répartition privilégiée de l'orientation des vibrations qui les composent. Les ondes électromagnétiques, telles que la lumière, ou les ondes gravitationnelles ont ainsi des propriétés de polarisation. Les ondes mécaniques transverses dans les solides peuvent aussi être polarisées. Cependant, les ondes longitudinales (telles que les ondes sonores) ne sont pas concernées.

Elliptical polarization

In electrodynamics, elliptical polarization is the polarization of electromagnetic radiation such that the tip of the electric field vector describes an ellipse in any fixed plane intersecting, and normal to, the direction of propagation. An elliptically polarized wave may be resolved into two linearly polarized waves in phase quadrature, with their polarization planes at right angles to each other. Since the electric field can rotate clockwise or counterclockwise as it propagates, elliptically polarized waves exhibit chirality.

Polarisation circulaire

La polarisation circulaire d'un rayonnement électromagnétique est une polarisation où la norme du vecteur du champ électrique ne change pas alors que son orientation change selon un mouvement de rotation. En électrodynamique la norme et la direction d'un champ électrique sont représentés par un vecteur comme on peut le voir dans l'animation ci-contre. Dans le cas d'une onde polarisée circulairement, les vecteurs d'un champ électrique, à un point donné dans l'espace, décrivent un cercle en fonction du temps.
