Bed joint reinforcement significantly affects the shear capacity of masonry walls due to its effective ability to transfer shear forces through a diagonal crack, but how does this phenomenon impact its drift capacity? This paper presents an experimental st ...

Explicit representation of uncertainties is essential to improve the reliability of seismic assessments of earthquake-damaged buildings, particularly when dealing with unreinforced masonry buildings. Modern inspection techniques use images for detecting an ...

Concrete rubble is among the most wasted materials worldwide. In this paper, we present a panorama of the upcycling potential of disused concrete rubble as construction material for new low-carbon structures. We identify 15 existing structural applications ...

Masonry buildings form building aggregates around the world in historical centers, which developed as the layout of the city or village densified. In these aggregates, adjacent buildings can share structural walls, connected at the interfaces by interlocki ...

In capacity-designed steel moment resisting frames (MRFs), inelastic deformations are mostly concentrated in the steel beams and the column fixed ends of the first story, while the participation of the panel zones in energy dissipation is limited. In such ...

Field observations and comprehensive life-cycle building assessment suggest that buildings designed according to today's seismic standards meet the life-safety requirement. However, they are prone to economic losses due to repairs in the aftermath of earth ...

The North American construction industry has seen substantial growth in the use of cold-formed steel (CFS) framing for midrise buildings in recent years. In seismic zones, CFS-framed buildings utilize shear walls to provide the primary lateral resistance t ...

Research conducted after the 1994 Northridge earthquake in the U.S. and the 1995 Kobe earthquake in Japan led to the development of today's pre-qualified beam-to-column connections for capacity-designed steel moment resisting frames (MRFs). Welded moment c ...

The seismic performance of unreinforced masonry buildings is commonly assessed using equivalent frame modelling. Its computational efficiency allows for a large number of analyses to be conducted, which are often required to account for epistemic and aleat ...

This paper presents the results of a series of shake table tests carried out on a half-scale single-story unreinforced masonry building with asymmetric openings. First, the unretrofitted building is subjected to seven increasing steps of bidirectional seis ...

Hybrid simulations were conducted to evaluate the system-level seismic response of a 4-story steel moment frame building and its gravity framing system through various levels of ground motion shaking. The experimental substructure examined in detail corres ...

Seismic design of standard structures is typically founded on a force-based design approach. Over the years this approach has proven robust and easily applicable by design engineers and - in combination with capacity design principles - it provides a good ...

Previous studies have investigated the slab effects on the cyclic behavior of composite beams in moment-resisting frames. Of interest in this paper, is the slab contribution to the flexural strength and effective stiffness of the beam. The former influence ...

This paper addresses seismic vulnerability assessment at urban scale. Particularly, it focuses on the differences in damage distribution obtained from the application of several simplified methods for displacement demand determination. The results obtained ...

This article introduces an analytical model to compute the monotonic force–displacement response of in-plane loaded unreinforced brick masonry walls accounting for walls failing in shear or flexure. The masonry wall is modelled as elastic in compression wit ...

Seismic exposure of buildings presents difficult engineering challenges. The principles of seismic design involve structures that sustain damage and still protect inhabitants. Precise and accurate knowledge of the residual capacity of damaged structures is ...

In the framework of Performance Based Earthquake Engineering (PBEE), assessing the inelastic behaviour of structures both at the global (force-displacement) and local (stress-strain) level is of priority importance. This goal is typically achieved by advan ...

This article presents a new mechanical model for the non-linear force-displacement response of unreinforced masonry (URM) walls developing a flexural rocking mode including their displacement capacity. The model is based on the plane section hypothesis and ...

The strength and deformation capacity of concrete frames is typically governed by their nodal regions behaviour. This is particularly relevant for frame corners subjected to opening bending moments, where premature brittle failures may develop depending on ...

Under strong earthquake motions, the liquid stored within large unanchored steel tanks can cause rocking and uplift of the tank base from the supporting foundation. Repeated rocking can lead to low-cycle fatigue fractures in the tank base-plate, and ultima ...
