In this thesis, we conduct a comprehensive investigation into structural instabilities of both elastic and magneto-elastic beams and shells, resulting in a creative proposal to design a programmable braille reader. Methodologically, we combine numerical si ...

The shift towards DC power distribution networks, enabled by power electronics technologies, is changing the nature of electrical power systems. Nowadays, DC power distribution networks can effectively support the high penetration of distributed energy res ...

This paper focuses on the operational characteristics of a medium voltage resonant DC transformer based on a split capacitor IGCT 3L-NPC leg. The study delves into both the dynamic and static balancing aspects of the 3L-NPC when operating in a two-level, 5 ...

In this work, we present a concept that leverages the strong piezoelectric polarization field in InGaN, which counteracts the external electric field at reverse bias. We show that despite the smaller InGaN band-gap and lower critical electric field, its st ...

The need of full transposition of the current carrying elements (strands) in large cables is frequently retained as top design criterion for conductors operating in pulsed mode. However, when the transposition error, i.e., the inductance difference among t ...

Nowadays, direct current (DC) technology is increasing its presence in alternating current (AC) power systems. This trend is enabled by the progress in energy conversion through semiconductor devices and power electronics. Therefore, it is possible to imag ...

This paper presents an output capacitor-less low-dropout regulator (LDO) with a bias switching scheme for biomedical applications with dual-range load currents. Power optimization is crucial for systems with multiple activation modes such as neural interfa ...

The aim of this thesis is to investigate the mechanical and thermal behaviour of HTS coated conductor cables for EUROfusion DEMO magnets. One of the issue in large HTS magnets is the safety against a quench. A quench is a sudden thermal runway in which the ...

PUS3 encodes the pseudouridylate synthase 3, an enzyme catalyzing the formation of tRNA pseudouridine, which plays a critical role in tRNA structure, function, and stability. Biallelic pathogenic variants of PUS3 have been previously associated with severe ...

Nowadays, with the increased interest in applications dealing with high-power medium-voltage conversion, there is a strong need to master the design of medium-frequency transformers, which are one of the key components of modern DC transformers. The paper ...

Inductive power transfer technology is an attractive solution for medium voltage applications by eliminating the need for high voltage cables or wired connections in general. This paper introduces an inductive power transfer system which has multiple indep ...

Paschen failures in ITER, W7-X and JT60 superconducting coils at the acceptance tests have shown that it is highly desirable to lower the coil discharge voltage (U-d) of the DEMO Toroidal Field (TF) coils. Another benefit of lowering the U-d might be the r ...

In this work, the emergence of polarization and electro-mechanical coupling in Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 and Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 â PbTiO3 was investigated by means of thermally stimulated current, and nonlinear dielectric and electro-mechanical measurements. The pre ...

In spite of the dominance of ac technology for the vast majority of power transmission and distribution since the late 19th century, the past decades have seen an increase in use of dc electrical power. In particular, this has been the case both in high vo ...

IGCTs have successfully demonstrated to be well-suited devices for an application in medium-voltage dc transformers based on LLC resonant converter topology. This application enables unusually high switching frequencies in kHz range thanks to the zero-volt ...

Recently, a new thermally activated distortion with amplification (TADA) effect has been reported in red gold alloys caused by the A1 -> L1(0) phase transformation. The macroscopic amplification is due to the persistence of variant selection nucleated unde ...

One of the most instrumental aspects governing the response of structural concrete at ultimate limit state refers to the possibility of developing smeared cracking patterns within a member (associated normally to the presence of sufficient reinforcement fo ...

LaFeO3 (LFO) is recognized as a candidate material for solar water oxidation, but its photoelectrochemical response remains modest and stagnant. With the aim of advancing LFO photoanodes for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), here, a nanorod array-type e ...

Wide-Band-Gap semiconductors have enabled considerable miniaturization of power devices, which requires, however, new thermal management solutions to handle the resulting high heat fluxes. Recently, embedded liquid cooling in GaN-on-Si devices was demonstr ...

Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) have extremely advantageous characteristics such as lightness, compactness, flexibility, and large displacements. However, in order to operate, they can require voltages in the order of several thousands of volts. Thus ...
