Peroxisomes are eukaryotic organelles that are essential for multiple metabolic pathways, including fatty acid oxidation, degradation of amino acids, and biosynthesis of ether lipids. Consequently, peroxisome dysfunction leads to pediatric-onset neurodegen ...

Habituation to recurrent non-threatening or unavoidable noxious stimuli is an important aspect of adaptation to pain. Neonates, especially if preterm, are exposed to repeated noxious procedures during their clinical care. They can mount strong behavioral, ...

Background. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is associated with acute respiratory infection. We sought to identify RSV variants associated with prolonged infection. ...

A photoredox-catalyzed oxidative decarboxylative coupling of small peptides is reported, giving access to a variety of N,O-acetals. They were used as intermediates for the addition of phenols and indoles, leading to novel peptide scaffolds and bioconjugate ...

Prematurity disrupts brain maturation by exposing the developing brain to different noxious stimuli present in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and depriving it from meaningful sensory inputs during a critical period of brain development, leading to ...

The unique vulnerability to infection of newborns and young infants is generally explained by a constellation of differences between early-life immune responses and immune responses at later ages, often referred to as neonatal immune immaturity. This devel ...

Premature birth has been associated with poor neurodevelopmental outcomes. However, the relation between such outcomes and brain growth in the neonatal period has not yet been fully elucidated. This study investigates longitudinal brain development between ...

Neonatal intensive care units are willing to apply environmental enrichment via music for preterm newborns. However, no evidence of an effect of music on preterm brain development has been reported to date. Using resting-state fMRI, we characterized a circ ...

Amino acids are the building blocks for protein biosynthesis and find use in myriad industrial applications including in food for humans, in animal feed, and as precursors for bio-based plastics, among others. However, the development of efficient chemical ...

Atomistic simulation methods, namely molecular dynamics and well-tempered metadynamics, are used in this thesis to investigate apatite formation from different aspects. First, ions which are more abundant in SBFs under physiological conditions were identif ...

Only a small proportion of newborn infants exposed to a pathogenic microorganism develop overt infection. Susceptibility to infection in preterm infants and infants with known comorbidities has a likely multifactorial origin and can be often attributed to ...

The ever growing demand for the development of new technologies and materials has led to extensive studies inspired by biological functional complexes. Peptides with their outstanding ability to efficiently self-assemble can express a broad spectrum of int ...

Several aspects in the field of molecular self assembly are addressed in this thesis. Thanks to the scanning tunnelling microscope (STM), structural, electronic and magnetic properties on surfaces can be studied down to the size of a single atom. In this t ...

Lactoferrin (Lf), component of maternal milk, has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Neuroprotective effects of Lf on the immature brain have been recently shown in rodent models of intrauterine growth restriction and cerebral hyp ...

Adverse conditions during fetal life have been associated to both structural and functional changes in neurodevelopment from the neonatal period to adolescence. In this study, connectomics was used to assess the evolution of brain networks from infancy to ...

The present invention relates to a bicyclic inhibitor of the coagulation enzyme activated factor XII (FXIIa) comprising or consisting of the peptide (X1)(X2)(X3)n(X4)(X5)(X6)m(X7)(X9)l(X10)(X11)(X12)(X13)(X14)k(X15)(X16), wherein (X1) is present or absent ...

Cyclic peptides binding to targets of interest can be generated efficiently with powerful in vitro display techniques, such as phage display or mRNA display. The cyclic peptide libraries screened with these methods are generated by altering in a combinator ...

The cyclic AMP-dependent transcriptional regulator GlxR from Corynebacterium glutamicum is a member of the super-family of CRP/FNR (cyclic AMP receptor protein/fumarate and nitrate reduction regulator) transcriptional regulators that play central roles in ...

Objective Lactoferrin (Lf) is an iron-binding glycoprotein secreted in maternal milk presenting anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It shows efficient absorption into the brain from nutritional source. Brain injury frequently resulting from cereb ...

Fragmentation of doubly charged biomolecules, uracil and amino acids, has been investigated using different ab inito Molecular Dynamics Methods. Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory Molecular Dynamics give a description of the non-adiabatic effects, th ...
