We numerically study wall-bounded convectively driven magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) flows subject to rotation in a Cartesian periodic channel. For the accurate treatment of the rotating MHD equations, we develop a pseudo-spectral simulation code with accurate ...

The work by Hassabis and Jumper on protein structure prediction together with Baker's supremacy in de novo protein design set the stage for a future where AI not only deciphers biology at the atomic level but also designs new molecules for biotechnology, m ...

Erosion significantly affects the dynamics of gravity-driven mass flows. In snow avalanches, the snow cover can be substantially eroded but only partially entrained, however, there are very limited investigations to substantiate this difference. Here, we s ...

Analysis-suitable T-splines (AST-splines) are a promising candidate to achieve a seamless integration between the design and the analysis of thin-walled structures in industrial settings. In this work, we allow multiple extraordinary points per face, i.e., ...

We show that isogeometric Galerkin discretizations of eigenvalue problems related to the Laplace operator subject to any standard type of homogeneous boundary conditions have no outliers in certain optimal spline subspaces. Roughly speaking, these optimal ...

Semi-Lagrangian (SL) schemes are of utmost relevance to simulate two-phase flows where advection dominates. The combination of SL schemes with the finite element (FE) method and arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) dynamic meshes yields a strong ingredient ...

We have used a variety of theoretical and experimental techniques to study the role of four basic amino acids-Arginine, Lysine, Ornithine and L-2,4-Diaminobutyric acid-on the structure, flexibility and sequence-dependent stability of DNA. We found that the ...

Molten Salt Reactors is a class of advanced reactors that is typically characterised by the presence of a molten inorganic salt of a fissile material as fuel. At the moment, this class of reactors is considered one of the promising options in the long run ...

Correlating the structures and properties of a polymer to its monomer sequence is key to understanding how its higher hierarchy structures are formed and how its macroscopic material properties emerge. Carbohydrate polymers, such as cellulose and chitin, a ...

Direct-coupling analysis (DCA) for studying the coevolution of residues in proteins has been widely used to predict the three-dimensional structure of a protein from its sequence. We present RADI/raDIMod, a variation of the original DCA algorithm that grou ...

The lubrication regimes of a contact pair escapement-ruby pallet of a Swiss lever escapement have been investigated combining the theory of fluid lubrication with a well-established kinematic and inverse dynamic multibody model. The kinematic analytical re ...

This work focuses on the study of several computational challenges arising when trimmed surfaces are directly employed for the isogeometric analysis of Kirchhoff-Love shells. To cope with these issues and to resolve mechanical and/or geometrical features o ...

The propagation of fluid driven fractures is used in a number of industrial applications (well stimulation of unconventional reservoirs, development of deep geothermal systems) but also occurs naturally (magmatic dyke intrusion). While the mechanics of hyd ...

Tectonic faults typically break in a single rupture mode within the range of styles from slow slip to dynamic earthquake failure. However, in increasingly well-documented instances, the same fault segment fails in both slow and fast modes within a short pe ...

In bacteria, nucleoid associated proteins (NAPs) take part in active chromosome organization by supercoil management, three-dimensional DNA looping and direct transcriptional control. Mycobacterial integration host factor (mIHF, rv1388) is a NAP restricted ...

Knots are interesting objects to experiment since their topological properties are combined with mechanical properties, fluid mechanics or dynamical properties like unknotting under the excitation of the thermal energy. Knots play also a role in biology be ...

Heuristic tools from statistical physics have been used in the past to locate the phase transitions and compute the optimal learning and generalization errors in the teacher-student scenario in multi-layer neural networks. In this paper, we provide a rigor ...

The variation of pressure of the blood is a key parameter in the development of ventricular assist device. This latter is useful in order to synchronize the behavior of the actuator with the cardiac frequency. This paper presents a sensor made of a dielect ...

In this paper, we examine the fundamental processes that occur during femtosecond-laser hyperdoping of silicon with a gas-phase dopant precursor. We probe the dopant concentration profile as a function of the number of laser pulses and pressure of the dopa ...

Minority carriers diffusion currents are particularly important in parasitic substrate couplings of Smart Power ICs. In CMOS technologies the P-substrate potential is imposed by P+ contacts and N-wells by N+ highly doped implantations. The doping concentra ...
