Concrete use in buildings significantly contributes to global CO2 emissions. Floor systems constitute a major portion of the concrete in building structures, making them a prime target for material reduction. Conventional design methods to calculate streng ...

Most codes of practice adopt a semi probabilistic design approach for the dimensioning and assessment of structures. Accordingly, structural safety is ensured by performing limit state verifications using design values determined with adequately calibrated ...

The compressive resistance of concrete in new structures is usually characterized on the basis of tests performed on concrete cylinders or cubes under relatively rapid loading conditions. Although efficient for material characterization, these tests do not ...

In concrete structures, opened cracks contribute significantly to the transfer of shear and normal stresses through the contact forces occurring between fractured surfaces. Such contact forces are due to protruding asperities, engaged by interlocking and f ...

The design of reinforced concrete flat slabs can be governed at failure by punching shear close to concentrated loads or columns. Geometrical features, reinforcement layouts and in-plane forces provided by external vertical elements, such as shear walls, c ...

This article presents a new mechanical model for the non-linear force-displacement response of unreinforced masonry (URM) walls developing a flexural rocking mode including their displacement capacity. The model is based on the plane section hypothesis and ...

Reinforced concrete slabs without shear reinforcement subjected to concentrated loads near linear sup- ports are usually designed or assessed in shear using design provisions that have been calibrated on the basis of tests on one-way slabs or beams with re ...

Punching shear resistance usually constitutes the decisive design criterion for reinforced concrete flat slabs supported by columns. Modeling approaches based on Kinnunen and Nylander's rotation-symmetric sector model, such as the Quadrilinear Sector Model ...

The automatic generation of elastic-plastic stress fields (EPSF) for structural concrete members by means of the finite element method has been demonstrated as a suitable approach for the design and assessment of D regions. This methodology allows accounti ...

The strength and deformation capacity of concrete frames is typically governed by their nodal regions behaviour. This is particularly relevant for frame corners subjected to opening bending moments, where premature brittle failures may develop depending on ...

The spreading of deicing salt on roads during winter and the consequent migration of chloride ions within concrete exposes structures reinforcement to corrosion. Reinforcement corrosion is problematic because it reduces the structure's load carrying capaci ...

On April 2010, the first complete draft of new Model Code 2010 was published. It introduced a number of innovative design approaches, some of them with respect to shear and punching shear. Contrary to Model Code 90 (or some national and international codes ...

The evolution of early age mechanical properties and volume change of cement paste is performed through Finite Element analysis on a 3D computer-generated cement paste. The time evolution of the hydrating microstructure is generated by μic(mike), a vectori ...

A mechanical explanation of the phenomenon of punching shear in slabs without transverse reinforcement is presented on the basis of the opening of a critical shear crack. It leads to the formulation of a new failure criterion for punching shear based on th ...

Direct load transmission experiments on hybrid short-span beam specimens for a novel bridge deck were performed. The sandwich construction consists of three layers: a fiber- reinforced polymer composite (FRP) sheet with T-upstands for the bottom skin, ligh ...

The behavior of seven one-half scale masonry specimens before and after retrofitting using fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) is investigated. Four walls were built using one-half scale hollow clay masonry units and weak mortar to simulate walls built in centr ...

Punching of reinforced concrete and prestressed slabs is usually a critical failure mode for the design and verification of structures such as flat slabs or bridge slabs. Although codes of practice propose several rules for common cases (usually with an em ...

The design of reinforced and prestressed concrete girders is usually performed so as to avoid any non ductile failure mode. Amongst these failure modes, one of the most undesirable occurs by crushing of concrete in the web. To avoid this brittle type of fa ...

Up until today reinforced concrete has been used in most cases for the manufacturing of bridge decks. Depending on the quality of the work carried out, defects can already occur after only a few years. These defects mostly appear in the form of corrosion o ...
