Model-free data-driven computational mechanics (DDCM) is a new paradigm for simulations in solid mechanics. The modeling step associated to the definition of a material constitutive law is circumvented through the introduction of an abstract phase space in ...

Solid-state qubits can be implemented with electrostatically confined quantum dots in semiconductors, allowing gate voltages to independently control the electrochemical potentials of each quantum dot. Quantum dots offer high levels of reliability and scal ...

This paper considers the multi-agent linear least-squares problem in a server-agent network architecture. The system comprises multiple agents, each with a set of local data points. The agents are connected to a server, and there is no inter-agent communic ...

We consider the problem of positive-semidefinite continuation: extending a partially specified covariance kernel from a subdomain Omega of a rectangular domain I x I to a covariance kernel on the entire domain I x I. For a broad class of domains Omega call ...

Local Hamiltonians of fermionic systems on a lattice can be mapped onto local qubit Hamiltonians. Maintaining the lo-cality of the operators comes at the ex-pense of increasing the Hilbert space with auxiliary degrees of freedom. In order to retrieve the l ...

Population equations for infinitely large networks of spiking neurons have a long tradition in theoret-ical neuroscience. In this work, we analyze a recent generalization of these equations to populations of finite size, which takes the form of a nonlinear ...

Torque teno virus (TTV) is considered to be an ubiquitous member of the commensal human blood virome commonly reported in mixed genotype co-infections. This study investigates the genomic diversity of TTV in blood samples from 816 febrile Tanzanian childre ...

Ternary-based titanium nitride (TiN) thin films have drawn attention toward rational applications due to their wear resistance, high hardness, and corrosion resistance. The influence of Mo content on the structural, tribo-logical, and mechanical properties ...

Motivated by the recent successes of neural networks that have the ability to fit the data perfectly \emph{and} generalize well, we study the noiseless model in the fundamental least-squares setup. We assume that an optimum predictor fits perfectly inputs ...

In the Large Hadron Collider, the beam losses are continuously measured for machine protection. By design, most of the particle losses occur in the collimation system, where the particles with high oscilla-tion amplitudes or large momentum error are scrape ...

We characterize the solution of a broad class of convex optimization problems that address the reconstruction of a function from a finite number of linear measurements. The underlying hypothesis is that the solution is decomposable as a finite sum of compo ...

Identification of the most stable structure(s) of a system is a prerequisite for the calculation of any of its properties from first-principles. However, even for relatively small molecules, exhaustive explorations of the potential energy surface (PES) are ...

Automated, ship-board flow cytometers provide high-resolution maps of phytoplankton composition over large swaths of the world's oceans. They therefore pave the way for understanding how environmental conditions shape community structure. Identification of ...

Compound TiSe2 has received much attention among the transition metal chalcogenides because of its thrilling physical properties concerning atypical resistivity behavior, the emergence of charge density wave (CDW) state, induced superconductivity, etc. Her ...

Poor decisions and selfish behaviors give rise to seemingly intractable global problems, such as the lack of transparency in democratic processes, the spread of conspiracy theories, and the rise in greenhouse gas emissions. However, people are more predict ...

This work develops novel rational Krylov methods for updating a large-scale matrix function f(A) when A is subject to low-rank modifications. It extends our previous work in this context on polynomial Krylov methods, for which we present a simplified conve ...

Neural network approaches to approximate the ground state of quantum hamiltonians require the numerical solution of a highly nonlinear optimization problem. We introduce a statistical learning approach that makes the optimization trivial by using kernel me ...

Semiconductor nanowires (NWs) in horizontal configuration could provide a path for scalable NW-based devices. Bottom-up large-scale manufacturing of these nanostructures by selective area epitaxy (SAE) relies on precise nanopatterning of various shapes on ...

We present a novel framework for the reconstruction of 1D composite signals assumed to be a mixture of two additive components, one sparse and the other smooth, given a finite number of linear measurements. We formulate the reconstruction problem as a cont ...

External kink modes, believed to be the drive of the 0-limiting resistive wall mode, are strongly stabilized by the presence of a separatrix. We thus propose a novel mechanism explaining the appearance of long-wavelength global instabilities in free bounda ...
