We report an alternative technique to perform a direct and local measurement of electrical resistivities in a layered retinal tissue. Information on resistivity changes along the depth in a retina is important for modelling retinal stimulation by retinal prostheses. Existing techniques for resistivity-depth profiling have the drawbacks of a complicated experimental setup, a less localised resistivity probing and/or lower stability for measurements. We employed a flexible microprobe to measure local resistiv

This book focuses on optical communications for short and very short distance applications and discusses the monolithic integration of optical receivers with processing elements in standard CMOS technologies. CMOS Multi-Channel Single-Chip Receivers for Multi-Gigabit Optical Data Communications provides the reader with the necessary background knowledge to fully understand the trade-offs in short-distance communication receiver design and presents the key issues to be addressed in the development of such re

This book provides the conceptual foundation for the design and development of complex distributed and real-time applications. It summarizes a large spectrum of concepts; but by concentrating on Java and presenting mainly the programmatic aspects and basic functioning of the concepts, the readability and ease of comptehension are greatly improved. The reader will be guided to determine thimself which is the best global ardchitectures, namely sets of components, threads and links, around which the functional

We are interested in the design of a MAC layer for systems that use ultra-wide band (UWB) communication and transmit very little power. We first explore the design space and find, that, for such networks, the optimal MAC should allow concurrent transmissions on as many channels as there are destinations; this is in sharp contrast to the established way of designing MAC protocols. Further, power control is not optimal: sources should always send at full power when they have something to transmit. Sources sho

This publication presents the application of Non-Linear Programming (NLP) to the design of AC induction motors driving hydraulic pumps on commercial aircrafts. In addition to the usual constraints on the geometry or on the efficiency of the motor, the specifications for this application include conditions on the supply frequency, environment temperature and in-rush current, which are very difficult to meet. The NLP had to be adapted to support constraints on multiple operating points of the motor. A prototy

We present a joint PHY/MAC architecture (DCC-MAC) for 802.15.4a-like networks based on PPM-UWB. Unlike traditional approaches it fully utilizes the specific nature of UWB to achieve high rates at low protocol complexity. It is the first MAC protocol that adapts the channel code (and thus the bit rate) to interference from concurrent transmissions instead of enforcing exclusion. In order to avoid a complex mutual exclusion protocol at the MAC layer, we propose an interference mitigation scheme. The scheme is

This paper studies the effect of a robot’s design (appearance) in facilitating and encouraging interaction of children with autism with a small humanoid robot. The paper compares the children’s level of interaction with and response to the robot in two different scenarios: one where the robot was dressed like a human (with a ‘pretty- girl’ appearance) with an uncovered face, and the other when it appeared with plain clothing and with a featureless, masked face. The results of these trials clearly indicate t

The objective of this paper is to identify the behavioral issues arising in the context of pedestrian dynamics, analyze how they have been addressed in the literature and propose some potential research tracks. We particularly focus on an application in the context of automatic video surveillance and present first ideas for the design of a pedestrian simulator.

A benchmark problem for restricted complexity controller design is introduced. The objective is to design the lowest-order controller which meets the control specifications for an active suspension system. The input-output data of the plant are provided on the benchmark site and the final controllers are evaluated using the closed-loop data. Thirteen solutions proposed to solve the benchmark problem are briefly presented and classified in terms of methodology and compared with respect to their complexity an

This paper describes the design methodology to build an autonomous mobile robot of just few cubic centimeters (2 x 2 x 2 cm). Starting from the expected features, the design path will be shown, going through solution proposition, component search, subsystems interconnections, several versions and ending to the final product. The second part of the paper will be dedicated to the control of such a robot which has implications in the control and software architecture. The overall design cycle results in the la

This paper presents a new Procedural Analog Design tool called PAD. It is a chart-based design environment dedicated to the design of analog circuits aiming to optimise design and quality by finding good tradeoffs. This interactive tool allows step-by-step design of analog cells by using guidelines for each analog topology. At each step, the user modifies interactively one subset of design parameters and observes the effect on other circuit parameters. At the end, an optimised design is ready for simulation

An electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) system has been designed for JET in the framework of the JET enhanced-performance project (JET-EP) under the European Fusion Development Agreement (EFDA). Due to financial constraints it has recently been decided not to implement this project. Nevertheless, the design work conducted from April 2000 to January 2002 shows a number of features that can be relevant in preparation of future ECRH systems, e.g. for ITER. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V.
