Fibrous Preforms and Preforming

Résumé

This article introduces the concept of preforms and preforming. A preform is defined as an assembly of yarns or textiles, which is generally stabilized by introduction of additional material, yarns or a binder powder. We first provide a brief review of textile forms and processes and then introduce the various preforming techniques, from 2D textiles or directly from the individual yarns. We finally address technical and scientific issues, including the mechanical behavior of the textile during preforming, and the influence of preforming on the permeability of the fiber assembly.

Textile

Initialement, il désigne donc un matériau qui peut se diviser en fibres ou en fils textiles, tels le coton, le chanvre, le lin, la laine (textiles organiques) ou la pierre d'amiante (textile minéral), puis avec la découverte de nouvelles techniques, les fibres synthétiques. L'action de séparer les fibres d'un textile s'appelle le filage.

Textile performance

Textile performance, also known as fitness for purpose, is a textile's capacity to withstand various conditions, environments, and hazards, qualifying it for particular uses. The performance of textile products influences their appearance, comfort, durability, and protection. Different textile applications (automotive, clothing, sleepwear, workwear, sportswear, upholstery, and PPE) require a different set of performance parameters. As a result, the specifications determine the level of performance of a textile product.

Le fil textile est le produit du filage, c'est-à-dire l'agglutination de fibres textiles pour former un ensemble long. Le processus d'obtention de ce fil peut être industrialisé dans un atelier ou une usine appelée filature. On entrecroise des fils, on tisse avec des machines ou bien à la main. On obtient ainsi des tissus, étoffes, tapis...
