Water at negative pressures can remain in a metastable state for a surprisingly long time before it reaches equilibrium by cavitation, i.e., by the formation of vapor bubbles. The wide spread of experimentally measured cavitation pressures depending on wat ...

We study the statistical mechanics and the equilibrium dynamics of a system of classical Heisenberg spins with frustrated interactions on a d -dimensional simple hypercubic lattice, in the limit of infinite dimensionality d -> infinity . In the analysis we ...

Electronic structure theory plays a central role in understanding properties of crystalline materials. Among all the ab initio methods, density functional theory (DFT) is the most popular choice due to its balance between accuracy and computational cost, a ...

One of the main challenges in the fabrication of bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) via laser-based additive manufacturing (AM) is undesirable crystal phase formation, which usually deteriorates the mechanical properties of the BMG fabricated parts. Understandin ...

Curcuminoids and their complexes continue to attract attention in medicinal chemistry, but little attention has been given to their metabolic derivatives. Here, the first examples of (arene)Ru(II) complexes with curcuminoid metabolites, tetrahydrocurcumin ...

Heterogeneous ice nucleation is a ubiquitous process in the natural and built environment. Deposition ice nucleation, i.e. heterogeneous ice nucleation that - according to the traditional view - occurs in a subsaturated water vapor environment and in the a ...

We investigate and characterise phase transitions driven by thermal fluctuations out of ordered phases into disordered ones on a series of two-dimensional models. We rely on tensor networks algorithms that approximate directly the partition function in the ...

Cupredoxins are widely occurring copper-binding proteins with a typical Greek-key beta barrel fold. They are generally described as electron carriers that rely on a T1 copper centre coordinated by four ligands provided by the folded polypeptide. The discov ...

Water can be vitrified if it is cooled at high rates, which makes it possible to outrun crystallization in so-called no man’s land, a range of deeply supercooled temperatures where water crystallizes rapidly. Here, we study the reverse process in pure wate ...

The emergence of mycelium-bonded biocomposites has been stimulated in the quest for sustainable development. These biocomposites exhibit enhanced mechanical properties through hot pressing, with mycelium playing a crucial role as both the adhesive and rein ...

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a rapidly growing class of materials that offer great promise in various applications. However, the synthesis remains challenging: for example, a range of crystal structures can often be accessed from the same building b ...

Black phosphorus (bP) is a crystalline material that can be seen as an ordered stacking of two-dimensional layers, which results in outstanding anisotropic physical properties. The knowledge of its pressure (P)-temperature (T) phase diagram, and in particu ...

Structure determination of materials is key to understanding their physical properties. While single-crystal X-ray diffraction is the gold standard for structures displaying long-range order, many materials of interest are polycrystalline and/or disordered ...

Due to the subtle balance of intermolecular interactions that govern structure-property relations, predicting the stability of crystal structures formed from molecular building blocks is a highly non-trivial scientific problem. A particularly active and fr ...

Incommensurately modulated crystalline phases are part of a more general family called aperiodic crystals. Their symmetry is treated within the theoretical framework of superspace groups that is a generalization of the 3D space groups that are used for con ...

The representation of Arctic clouds and their phase distributions, i.e., the amount of ice and supercooled water, influences predictions of future Arctic warming. Therefore, it is essential that cloud phase is correctly captured by models in order to accur ...

In the third study, the order-disorder phase transition of single-crystal C60 is studied using time-resolved electron microscopy. Solid C60 undergoes a first-order phase transition upon heating to 260 K. This is a structural transition from the low-tempera ...

Catalysts play a major role in chemical synthesis, and catalysis is considered to be a green and economic process. Catalysis is dominated by covalent interactions between the catalyst and substrate. The design of non-covalent catalysts came into limelight ...

The thermal behavior of 3-benzoylpropionic acid (BPA) was investigated using single-crystal and synchrotron powder X-diffraction, as well as differential scanning calorimetry analysis. The study revealed the existence of two subtly distinct structures of B ...

Guanine crystals are frequently encountered in nature in the beta-polymorph to create structural colors, to enhance the vision of creatures, and for camouflage. Unfortunately, it is challenging to control the crystallization of guanine in aqueous condition ...
