Cobordism, Cohomology Theories and Formal Group Laws

Résumé

We first explore the notion of G-manifold, cobordism and then discuss the generalized Pontrjagin-Thom Theorem. We then compute the cobordism rings Ω (...) using stable homotopy theory. Secondly, we investigate the relations between cohomology theories and formal group laws. This is the very beginning of the so called chromatic homotopy theory. For any complex oriented cohomology theories, we associate a formal group law. We show that the formal group law associated to complex cobordism is universal. Finally, for a suitable formal group law we give a way to realize it into a generalized homology theory.

Cohomology

In mathematics, specifically in homology theory and algebraic topology, cohomology is a general term for a sequence of abelian groups, usually one associated with a topological space, often defined from a cochain complex. Cohomology can be viewed as a method of assigning richer algebraic invariants to a space than homology. Some versions of cohomology arise by dualizing the construction of homology. In other words, cochains are functions on the group of chains in homology theory.

Cobordisme

En topologie différentielle, le cobordisme est une relation d'équivalence entre variétés différentielles compactes. Deux variétés compactes M et N sont dites cobordantes ou en cobordisme si leur réunion disjointe peut être réalisée comme le bord d'une variété à bord compacte L. On dit alors que cette variété L est un cobordisme entre M et N, ou bien que L réalise un cobordisme entre M et N. L'existence d'un tel cobordisme implique que M et N soient de même dimension.

Théorie de l'homotopie

La théorie de l'homotopie est une branche des mathématiques issue de la topologie algébrique dans laquelle les espaces et applications sont considérés à homotopie près. La notion topologique de déformation est étendue à des contextes algébriques notamment via les structures de complexe différentiel puis d’algèbre A. Étant donné deux équivalences d’homotopie f : X′ → X et g : Y → Y′, l’ensemble des classes d'homotopie des applications continues entre X et Y s’identifie à celui des applications entre X′ et Y′ par composition avec f et g.
