he rehabilitation of existing bridges should always be the first investigated solution because it usually reduces construction costs, environmental impacts, and traffic disruption. Nonetheless, bridges are too often replaced due to the lack of effective st ...

Steel frame structures are essential components of modern infrastructure. Understanding their behavior under seismic loading is critical for ensuring public safety and minimizing damage that occurs during earthquakes. To accurately predict the response of ...

Materials with field-tunable polarization are of broad interest to condensed matter sciences and solid-state device technologies. Here, using hydrogen (H) donor doping, we modify the room temperature metallic phase of a perovskite nickelate NdNiO3 into an ...

Solid-state transformers with input-series outputparallel structures are being considered for a variety of applications requiring MVAC to LVDC conversion. Due to the singlephase AC/DC conversion at the input side, all floating cells of the solid-state tran ...

Reinforced concrete flat slabs consist of a continuous, thin concrete plate that rests on a grid of columns. The supporting surface of the columns is very small compared to the floor plan dimensions, leading to concentrations of shear forces near the colum ...

Transient electronics have emerged as a new category of devices that can degrade after their functional lifetime, offering tremendous potential as disposable sensors, actuators, wearables, and implants. Additive manufacturing methods represent a promising ...

Explicit representation of uncertainties is essential to improve the reliability of seismic assessments of earthquake-damaged buildings, particularly when dealing with unreinforced masonry buildings. Modern inspection techniques use images for detecting an ...

Concrete rubble is among the most wasted materials worldwide. In this paper, we present a panorama of the upcycling potential of disused concrete rubble as construction material for new low-carbon structures. We identify 15 existing structural applications ...

Most codes of practice adopt a semi probabilistic design approach for the dimensioning and assessment of structures. Accordingly, structural safety is ensured by performing limit state verifications using design values determined with adequately calibrated ...

Codes of practice can be overly conservative, particularly for the shear resistance of reinforced concrete beams with shear reinforcement when large loads act close to supports. This thesis addresses the topic by proposing a refined design approach based o ...

A gas diffusion electrode (GDE) based CO2 electrolyzer shows enhanced CO2 transport to the catalyst surface, significantly increasing current density compared to traditional planar immersed electrodes. A two-dimensional model for the cathode side of a micr ...

Bed joint reinforcement significantly affects the shear capacity of masonry walls due to its effective ability to transfer shear forces through a diagonal crack, but how does this phenomenon impact its drift capacity? This paper presents an experimental st ...

This paper presents an innovative design concept for embedded column base (ECB) connections. The developed ECB connection achieves a non-degrading hysteretic response. In the proposed ECB connections, the dissipative zone is shifted into the embedded porti ...

This paper describes the Data Domotopia a 2300 + respondent self-administered webbased survey. It includes 100 + multi-purpose items about home-making and stillness in a moving world. We suppose that home-making can reveal coping strategies and resilience ...

In capacity designed steel moment resisting frames, inelastic deformations are mostly concentrated in the steel beams and the column fixed ends of the first story. This design concept limits the participation of the column web’s panel zone in the energy di ...

In capacity-designed steel moment resisting frames (MRFs), inelastic deformations are mostly concentrated in the steel beams and the column fixed ends of the first story, while the participation of the panel zones in energy dissipation is limited. In such ...

We report on the design and characterization of two inductive proximity sensors based on LC oscillators operating at 500 MHz. The distance from the target is obtained by measuring the oscillation frequency variation. Both sensors contain an off-chip LC res ...

Network alignment is the task of identifying topologically and semantically similar nodes across (two) different networks. It plays an important role in various applications ranging from social network analysis to bioinformatic network interactions. Howeve ...

Sustainable development has emerged as a paramount consideration in various fields of industry, including construction, to preserve the environment and its finite resources. Lightweight structures, such as fiber-polymer composite structures, address both s ...

Within the frame of the revision of the Eurocode 2 for concrete structures, the section devoted to strut-and-tie design has been up-dated to enhance its applicability, its consistency with other sections and its ease-of-use. As a result, a number of change ...
