We present a numerical model for the approximation of multiphase flows with free surfaces and strong interfacial effects. The model relies on the multiphase incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, and includes surface tension effects on the interfaces betw ...

Surface stress drives long-range elastocapillary interactions at the surface of compliant solids, where it has been observed to mediate interparticle interactions and to alter the transport of liquid drops. We show that such an elastocapillary interaction ...

There is a growing recognition that electronic band structure is a local property of materials and devices, and there is steep growth in capabilities to collect the relevant data. New photon sources, from small-laboratory-based lasers to free electron lase ...

The conjugate heat transfer in mixtures of a fluid and single granular clusters is studied in this paper using a novel lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) programmed for parallel computation on the graphics processing unit (GPU). The LBM is validated for heat c ...

In this thesis, we study systems of active particles interacting via generic torques of different nature. We analyze the phase behavior of these systems, which results from the interplay between self-propulsion, excluded-volume and torques. We tackle the p ...

The use of model-based numerical simulations of wave propagation in rooms for engineering applications requires that acoustic conditions for multiple parameters are evaluated iteratively, which is computationally expensive. We present a reduced basis metho ...

Particle dampers have received considerable attention in recent years as a novel damping technique. However, due to its high degree of nonlinearity, no mature damping model has been constructed. This article proposes an equivalent raft model that takes int ...

The present invention is related to a method of volumetric manufacturing a three-dimensional object or article by illuminating a non-transparent and/or absorptive photo-sensitive material with light patterns from multiple angles, comprising the steps of ca ...

A well-known, previously only 1D, algorithm using the Sparse Representation of Signals and an iterative Block Coordinate Descent method (the SparSpec-1D algorithm) has been further developed and tested in a 2D spatial domain to obtain the toroidal and polo ...

Biofilms are spatially structured ecosystems, characterized by patterns and architectural features determined by the interplay between endogenous and exogenous processes. As in many other structured ecosystems, the characterization of spatial interactions ...

Though Switzerland has one of the highest life expectancies in the world, this global indicator may mask significant disparities at a local level. The present study used a spatial cluster detection approach based on individual death records to investigate ...

We consider the influence of transverse confinement on the instability properties of velocity and density distributions reminiscent of those pertaining to exchange flows in stratified inclined ducts, such as the recent experiment of Lefauve et al. [J. Flui ...

The mammalian brain develops through a complex interplay of spatial cues generated by diffusible morphogens, cell-cell interactions and intrinsic genetic programs that result in probably more than a thousand distinct cell types. A complete understanding of ...

In the fields of microgripping and microassembly, the self-alignment motion of a solid micro-object linked by a liquid meniscus to a substrate or a tool is an inexpensive way to overcome the current limitations of the assembly processes at microscale by ge ...

Spatiotemporally chaotic dynamics of transitional plane Couette flow may give rise to regular turbulent-laminar stripe patterns with a large-scale pattern wavelength and an oblique orientation relative to the laminar flow direction. A recent dynamical syst ...

Recently, there has been significant interest in using dielectric nanocavities for the controlled scattering of light, owing to the diverse electromagnetic modes that they support. For plasmonic systems, electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) is now an e ...

In this paper, we carry out a systematic comparison between the theoretical properties of Spectral Element Methods and NURBS-based Isogeometric Analysis in its basic form, that is in the framework of the Galerkin method, for the approximation of the Poisso ...

We study the pattern formation of a thin film flowing under an inclined planar substrate. The phenomenon is studied in the context of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability using the lubrication equation. Inspired by experimental observations, we numerically stud ...

The numerical solution of the stepped pressure equilibrium (Hudson et al 2012 Phys. Plasmas 19 112502) requires a fast and robust solver to obtain the Beltrami field in three-dimensional geometry such as stellarators. The spectral method implemented in the ...
