Electromagnetic time reversal is commonly used for field imaging and focusing. This Letter builds upon the concept of the time -reversal cavity, which constitutes the main theoretical framework of time reversal theory. We study the behavior of the fields u ...

Heterogeneous catalyst preparation has been performed for close to a century but has been rapidly evolving spurred by the evolution in synthetic techniques and growing needs in energy, chemicals and materials. An increasing number of catalyst synthesis str ...

In this work we study in-depth the antireflection and filtering properties of ultrathin-metal-film-based transparent electrodes (MTEs) integrated in thin-film solar cells. Based on numerical optimization of the MTE design and the experimental characterizat ...

Living organisms can catalyze many thousands of biochemical reactions that they use to convert energy and matter, which provides them with the essentials for life. The sum of these chemical reactions happening in an organism is called metabo-lism. Understa ...

GaN-based devices are ubiquitous in everyday life, ranging from InGaN/GaN light-emitting diodes (LEDs) for illumination to AlGaN/GaN high-electron-mobility transistors for compact power supplies. Nevertheless, despite the tremendous development in the past ...

Electrocatalysts play an important part on the route towards environmental friendly energy sources. They support modern technologies like fuel cells to move further away from the utilization of fossil fuels and the resulting CO2 emission into our atmospher ...

In this thesis work, we propose to exploit an innovative micro/nano-fabrication process, based on controlled fluid instabilities of a thin viscous film of chalcogenide glass. Amorphous selenium and arsenic triselenide were used in this thesis work, and com ...

The present article describes the preliminary validation study of simulated in-core and reflector n eutron spectra in preparation of oncoming experimental programs in the zero-power reactor CROCUS at EPFL. For this purpose, a set of activation foils were i ...

Stereotyped as a nexus of dNTP synthesis, the dual-subunit enzyme - ribonucleotide reductase (RNR) - is coming into view as a paradigm of oligomerization and moonlighting behavior. In the present issue of `omics', we discuss what makes the larger subunit o ...

The aim of this thesis is to contribute to the development of analysis methods that enable an improved investigation of the CO2 hydrogenation reaction such as quantitative mass spectrometry and infrared thermography. Furthermore, the contribution is in the ...

Reactions with ozone transform organic and inorganic molecules in water treatment systems as well as in atmospheric chemistry, either in the aqueous phase, at gas/particle interfaces, or in the gas phase. Computed thermokinetic data can be used to estimate ...

This thesis investigates the interaction between mechanically induced flow of a liquid metal into a porous solid, and kinetic effects at the triple line. The approach is experimental and focuses on metal-ceramic systems for which the literature gives value ...

Thousands of biochemical reactions with characterized activities are “orphan,” meaning they cannot be assigned to a specific enzyme, leaving gaps in metabolic pathways. Novel reactions predicted by pathway-generation tools also lack associated sequences, l ...

Analysis of the dynamic and steady-state properties of biochemical networks hinges on information about the parameters of enzyme kinetics. The lack of experimental data characterizing enzyme activities and kinetics along with the associated uncertainties i ...

Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEA) are elastic capacitors composed of a pair of compliant electrodes and a soft dielectric elastomer film sandwiched in between. This kind of stretchable capacitors can be actuated when charged, can generate electricity fr ...

Integral and peripheral membrane proteins account for one-third of the human proteome, and they are estimated to represent the target for over 50% of modern medicinal drugs. Despite their central role in medicine, the complex, heterogeneous and dynamic nat ...

Dielectric elastomer transducers are elastic capacitors that respond to mechanical or electrical stress. They can be used in applications such as millimeter-sized soft robots and harvesters of the energy contained in ocean waves. The dielectric component o ...

A new method for the rapid and economic fabrication of dual soft microelectrodes for Soft-Probe-Scanning electrochemical microscopy (Soft-Probe-SECM) and their use for the simultaneous local detection of locally generated species is presented. The process ...

While the development of methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI(3)) perovskite for photovoltaics has grown rapidly, the growth of high-quality material from vapor processes continues to be difficult due to challenges including crystallinity control. Methylamine ...

The structure of a biological system defines its function. Therefore, nature has developed sophisticated systems that catalyze chemical reactions that are vital for life on earth. For instance, the photosynthesis is a biological process that is partially r ...
