Although existing standards typically prescribe fixed ventilation rates, a large portion of the building stock lacks mechanical ventilation systems. Such buildings obtain outdoor air through unintentional infiltration, open windows, and the operation of ex ...

Iodine oxoacids are recognised for their significant contribution to the formation of new particles in marine and polar atmospheres. Nevertheless, to incorporate the iodine oxoacid nucleation mechanism into global simulations, it is essential to comprehend ...

This work is driven by the effort towards increased environmental sustainability and aims to develop a new food packaging material based on renewable materials, and more specifically cellulose as the most abundant biomass resource on Earth. Focus was on mi ...

We study the limit behaviour of sequences of non-convex, vectorial, random integral functionals, defined on W1,1, whose integrands are ergodic and satisfy degenerate linear growth conditions. The latter involve suitable random, scale-dependent weight-funct ...

Non-convex constrained optimization problems have become a powerful framework for modeling a wide range of machine learning problems, with applications in k-means clustering, large- scale semidefinite programs (SDPs), and various other tasks. As the perfor ...

In this paper, we study the rank-one convex hull of a differential inclusion associated to entropy solutions of a hyperbolic system of conservation laws. This was introduced in [B. Kirchheim, S. Muller and V. S(sic)ver & aacute;k, Studying Nonlinear PDE by ...

This work develops new algorithms with rigorous efficiency guarantees for infinite horizon imitation learning (IL) with linear function approximation without restrictive coherence assumptions. We begin with the minimax formulation of the problem and then o ...

This paper proposes a method for the construction of quadratic serendipity element (QSE) shape functions on planar convex and concave polygons. Existing approaches for constructing QSE shape functions are linear combinations of the pair-wise products of ge ...

We consider distributed optimization over several devices, each sending incremental model updates to a central server. This setting is considered, for instance, in federated learning. Various schemes have been designed to compress the model updates in orde ...

In this paper, we analyze the recently proposed stochastic primal-dual hybrid gradient (SPDHG) algorithm and provide new theoretical results. In particular, we prove almost sure convergence of the iterates to a solution with convexity and linear convergenc ...

There has been a recent surge of interest in the study of asymptotic reconstruction performance in various cases of generalized linear estimation problems in the teacher-student setting, especially for the case of i.i.d standard normal matrices. Here, we g ...

We describe the first gradient methods on Riemannian manifolds to achieve accelerated rates in the non-convex case. Under Lipschitz assumptions on the Riemannian gradient and Hessian of the cost function, these methods find approximate first-order critical ...

We relate discrepancy theory with the classic scheduling problems of minimizing max flow time and total flow time on unrelated machines. Specifically, we give a general reduction that allows us to transfer discrepancy bounds in the prefix Beck-Fiala (bound ...

A class of deep Boltzmann machines is considered in the simplified framework of a quenched system with Gaussian noise and independent entries. The quenched pressure of a K-layers spin glass model is studied allowing interactions only among consecutive laye ...

We consider the problem of finding a saddle point for the convex-concave objective

\min_x \max_y f(x) + \langle Ax, y\rangle - g^*(y)

, where

f

is a convex function with locally Lipschitz gradient and

g

is convex and possibly non-smooth. We propose an ...

It has been experimentally observed that the efficiency of distributed training with stochastic gradient (SGD) depends decisively on the batch size and—in asynchronous implementations—on the gradient staleness. Especially, it has been observed that the spe ...

Layered hybrid halide perovskites are known to be more environmentally stable than their 3D analogues. The enhanced stability is particularly relevant for Dion-Jacobson-type layered perovskites due to their promising photovoltaic performances. However, in ...

Robust and distributionally robust optimization are modeling paradigms for decision-making under uncertainty where the uncertain parameters are only known to reside in an uncertainty set or are governed by any probability distribution from within an ambigu ...

There is an increasing interest in a fast-growing machine learning technique called Federated Learning (FL), in which the model training is distributed over mobile user equipment (UEs), exploiting UEs' local computation and training data. Despite its advan ...

We develop an analytical model of adhesive wear between two unlubricated rough surfaces, forming micro-contacts under normal load. The model is based on an energy balance and a crack initiation criteria. We apply the model to the problem of self-affine rou ...
