The need of full transposition of the current carrying elements (strands) in large cables is frequently retained as top design criterion for conductors operating in pulsed mode. However, when the transposition error, i.e., the inductance difference among t ...

In online single-sided partial discharge (PD) location, the measured PD reflection patterns are affected by the characteristics of all the components of the associated power network. This paper analyses the performance of a PD location method based on elec ...

In this paper, a rigorous and independent validation of two different approaches for calculating the ground-return impedance and admittance of multiconductor underground cable systems using the transmission line theory is carried out. Furthermore, analyses ...

Cell-sized giant unilamellar vesicles (GUVs) are an ideal tool for understanding lipid membrane structure and properties. Label-free spatiotemporal images of their membrane potential and structure would greatly aid the quantitative understanding of membran ...

Following the conceptual design, the engineering design of the dc magnet and cable-in-conduit conductor (CICC) for the Super-X test facility has been done in 2021. Totally three types of conductors with different structures were designed for the three pair ...

A robust capacitive multisensory readout system is presented in this article. The system consists of a few thousand lossy capacitive-based sensors that can be modeled as a parallel connection of sensor capacitor and undesirable leakage resistance. The real ...

Nanopores in solid state membranes are a tool able to probe nanofluidic phenomena or can act as a single molecular sensor. They also have diverse applications in filtration, desalination, or osmotic power generation. Many of these applications involve chem ...

Janus membranes, thin permeable structures with chemical and geometrical asymmetric properties, show great potential in industrial separation processes. Yet the link between the micro- and macro-scale behaviours of these membranes needs to be established r ...

In the last few years, the current density of Bi-2212 wires has been greatly improved by filament densify technologies. One further step toward applications in fusion magnets is to design a high current cable, which must overcome the drawbacks of Bi-2212 w ...

A micro- or nanostructured optical element (1) is proposed comprising: a membrane (3) with an array of holes (5), the membrane (3) comprising a membrane light wave facing surface; an array of pillars (7) sized and shaped such that a respective pillar (7) i ...

Liquid composite moulding methods are widely applied for manufacturing of fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) composites and consist of two main stages: impregnation of fibrous reinforcements by a liquid monomer resin and curing of this resin. This thesis work ...

Implantable drug delivery systems that can realize a scheduled drug release according to the needs of patients would be highly beneficial for the treatment of chronic diseases and cancer. Here, micrometer‐sized hydrogel particles with both thermal and pH s ...

It is shown that the comb IDT (CT) can efficiently excite SH0 mode in piezoelectric membrane of suitable orientation. The transducer has pitch equal to the wavelength (p=lambda) and the electrode size is half of the wavelength. As compared to conventional ...

This thesis reports the use of metal-coated three-dimensional SU-8 electrodes for dielectrophoretic bio sensing and particle manipulation applications. Placing free standing three-dimensional electrodes in microfluidic channels, electric fields can be appl ...

Cations influence the electrostatic, chemical and mechanical properties of lipid bilayers. Here, label-free second harmonic microscopy shows that cation-induced transient ordering of water also plays a role in driving membrane curvature fluctuations, linki ...

Friction and wear depend critically on surface roughness and its evolution with time. An accurate control of roughness is essential to the performance and durability of virtually all engineering applications. At geological scales, roughness along tectonic ...

Lipid membranes are self-assembled structures whose composition determines the properties of membranes of cells and organelles. The molecular level understanding of lipid membranes is based on spectroscopy and MD simulations of lipid monolayer systems. As ...

A hybrid design of the Central Solenoid is under study within the conceptual design phase of the European DEMO fusion reactor. It is based on HTS conductors in the innermost high-field layers, and Nb3Sn and NbTi conductors for field values below 15 T. Sinc ...

Lipid membranes provide diverse and essential functions in our cells relating to transport, energy harvesting and signaling. This variety of functions is controlled by the molecular architecture, such as the presence of hydrating water, specific chemical c ...

We present Deep MinCut (DMC), an unsupervised approach to learn node embeddings for graph -structured data. It derives node representations based on their membership in communities. As such, the embeddings directly provide insights into the graph structure ...
