Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) disrupts the communication between the brain and spinal circuits below the lesion, leading to a plethora of neurological impairments, including the loss of motor function. At present, the only medical practices to enhance recovery ...

Objective. Electrical stimulation of biological tissue is an established technique in research and clinical practice that uses implanted electrodes to deliver electrical pulses for a variety of therapies. Significant research currently explores new electro ...

Thanks to recent technological advances in microelectronics and bioengineering, it is now possible to restore lost or impaired sensory modalities by interfering the nervous system with elec-tronic devices and artificially reproducing the electrical encodin ...

Visual motion discrimination involves reciprocal interactions in the alpha band between the primary visual cortex (V1) and mediotemporal areas (V5/MT). We investigated whether modulating alpha phase synchronization using individualized multisite transcrani ...

Neural interfaces are devices that are implanted into the body and interface electrically with the central (CNS) or peripheral nervous system. They are inserted surgically for short periods of time or chronically to diagnose or treat several neural disease ...

Segmented deep brain stimulation leads feature directional electrodes that allow for a finer spatial control of electrical stimulation compared to traditional ring-shaped electrodes. These segmented leads have demonstrated enlarged therapeutic windows and ...

To comprehend the most detrimental characteristics behind bone fractures, it is key to understand the material and tissue level strain limits and their relation to failure sites. The aim of this study was to investigate the three-dimensional strain distrib ...

The treatment of bone defects with recombinant bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) requires high doses precluding broad clinical application. Here, a bioengineering approach is presented that strongly improves low-dose BMP-2-based bone regeneration by mob ...

Our brain constantly receives and integrates a flow of sensory and motor information that shapes the way our body is represented. Several experimental approaches have been proposed to alter the body representation, by manipulating exteroceptive or interoce ...

The outstanding physico-chemical properties of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) applied to rectify the problems in bone tissue engineering through enhancing cell proliferation, adhesion and viability, which lead to the improvement in bone replacement, growth and he ...

Objective.Micro-fabricated neural interfaces based on polyimide (PI) are achieving increasing importance in translational research. The ability to produce well-defined micro-structures with properties that include chemical inertness, mechanical flexibility ...

A system (10) for neuromodulation and/or neurostimulation, for the treatment of a mammal, at least comprising: - at least one control unit (12) configured and arranged to provide stimulation data; - at least one stimulation unit (14) configured and arrange ...

Understanding the interactions between biomedical alloys and body fluids is of importance for the successful and safe performance of implanted devices. Albumin, as the first protein that comes in contact with an implant surface, can determine the biocompat ...
