With the ongoing journey of automation advancements and a trend towards miniaturization, the choice of actuator plays a crucial role. Over recent years, soft actuators have demonstrated their usefulness in various applications, especially where light weigh ...

This thesis explores an instance of Moravec's paradox within the domain of impact-aware non-prehensile manipulation. The specific task investigated here involves interacting with a simple environment through the application of an impulse, or a hit / strike ...

To meet the Paris Agreement target of limiting global warming to 1.5°C, the International Energy Agency stresses the urgent need for rapid and transformative actions in all sectors. In 2022, transportation accounted for about 25% of global CO2 emissions, m ...

As demonstrated by the Soft Robotics Toolkit Platform, compliant robotics pose an exciting educational opportunity. Underwater robotics using soft undulating fins is an expansive research topic with applications such as exploration of underwater life or re ...

We report a soft actuator that generates continuous rotation of an object placed on it by electromagnetically exciting circular travelling waves in a soft disk. The disk, that serves as the stator, is made of a stretchable composite consisting of segments ...

Plantar pressure plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of foot ulcers among patients with diabetes and peripheral polyneuropathy. Pressure relief is a key requirement for both the prevention and treatment of plantar ulcers. Conventional medical practice ...

This thesis reports high energy-density electrostatic actuators for use in soft robotics. This thesis has two main parts: a) a detailed study of electro-adhesion using microfabricated electrodes, and b) a flexi-ble fiber-shaped linear motor. Electro-adhesi ...

The superconducting magnet system of the Divertor Tokamak Test (DTT) facility, composed of 18 toroidal field (TF) coils, 6 poloidal field coils and a central solenoid, has been designed and many procurements have been launched. Some manufacturing aspects a ...

A new electrically driven gas booster is described as an alternative to the classical air-driven gas boosters known for their poor energetic efficiency. These boosters are used in small scale Hydrogen storage facilities and in refueling stations for Hydrog ...

The modern world is heavily reliant on electromagnetic devices to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy and vice versa. These devices are fundamental to powering our society, and the growing need for automated production lines and electrified tr ...

A major upgrade of the European DIPOle (EDIPO) test facility, which will allow the testing of superconducting samples both for fusion and for high-energy physics applications, is taking place at the Swiss Plasma Center. With a target background field of 15 ...

The following data contain the information and files, which are required to recreate and build the experimental setup that is described in the Laboratory manual. Further details can be found in the associated publication “A graduate laboratory experiment t ...

Fluidic actuation enables movement in a wide range of mechanical systems, from simple laboratory devices to more complex industrial machinery. Fluids are used to generate motion of mechanical pieces. The term "fluids" encompasses two types of technologies: ...

Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEA) are elastic capacitors composed of a pair of compliant electrodes and a soft dielectric elastomer film sandwiched in between. This kind of stretchable capacitors can be actuated when charged, can generate electricity fr ...

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have emerged as a transformative approach to analyse molecular systems at the atomic level, offering valuable insights into complex biological processes. Many biological phenomena can only accurately be described by inco ...

Appropriate waste and resource management are essential for a sustainable circular economy with reduced environmental impact. With critical resources, e-waste may serve as indirect raw material. For example, with NdFeB permanent magnets, Neodymium (Nd) and ...

Electro-adhesion (EA) is a low-power, tunable, fast and reversible electrically-controlled adhesion method, effective on both conducting and insulating objects. Typically, only the electro-adhesive detachment force, i.e., the force required to separate an ...

Molecular machines offer many opportunities for the development of responsive materials and introduce autono-mous motion in molecular systems. While basic molecular switches and motors carry out one type of motion upon being exposed to an external stimulus ...

The European Roadmap to Fusion Electricity (Federici et al., 2018) [1] details the path to complete within the next three decades the DEMOnstration power plant, DEMO, aiming to a net gain of Energy Q=40. The 2018 DEMO baseline considers a 2 GW tokamak devi ...

The continuous reduction of the structural size in nanotechnology slowed down over the last decade, approaching the natural limit of single atoms as building blocks of matter. Therefore, intensive research is directed toward exploring new frontiers, in par ...
