This thesis investigates the magnetic properties of single atoms and molecules adsorbed on thin magnesium oxide decoupling layers, grown on a silver single crystal. To address these systems experimentally, we use a low temperature scanning tunneling micros ...

Molecules with inversion of the singlet and triplet excited-state energies are highly promising for the development of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). To date, azaphenalenes are the only class of molecules where these inversions have been identified ...

Hyperpolarization of 13C by dissolution dynamic nuclear polarization (dDNP) boosts the sensitivity of magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), making possible the monitoring in vivo and in real time of the biochemical reactions of exogenously infused 13C-lab ...

Structure determination of materials is key to understanding their physical properties. While single-crystal X-ray diffraction is the gold standard for structures displaying long-range order, many materials of interest are polycrystalline and/or disordered ...

The role of 1H solid-state NMR in structure elucidation of solids is becoming more preponderant, particularly as faster magic-angle spinning rates (MAS) become available which improve 1H detected assignment strategies. However, current 1H spectral resoluti ...

Simple Summary The cytoplasm of a living cell is a crowded place, containing hundreds of types of protein and other macromolecules. Cells reliably and continually perform thousands of biochemical reactions to maintain their health. Biomolecular condensates ...

This thesis investigates novel single-molecule luminescence phenomena at their inherent, sub-molecular length scale. The microscopic understanding of luminescence processes will be crucial for the continued improvement of organic optoelectronic and semicon ...

Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) remains to date an incurable disease with a long asymptomatic phase. Early diagnosis in peripheral biofluids has emerged as key for identifying subjects at risk and developing therapeutics and preventative approaches. ...

Purpose: We have introduced an artificial intelligence framework, 31P-SPAWNN, in order to fully analyze phosphorus-31 (P-31) magnetic resonance spectra. The flexibility and speed of the technique rival traditional least-square fitting methods, with the per ...

Diamond magnetometry makes use of fluorescent defects in diamonds to convert magnetic resonance signals into fluorescence. Because optical photons can be detected much more sensitively, this technique currently holds several sensitivity world records for r ...

We performed magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) on healthy individuals with tinnitus and no hearing loss (n = 16) vs. a matched control group (n = 17) to further elucidate the role of excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitters in tinnitus. Two-dimensio ...

Solid-state NMR can provide information about the atomic-level microstructure and dynamics in materials as it directly probes the local nuclear environment. In the last decade, halide perovskites have drawn intense interest because of their intriguing opto ...

The resolving power, chemical sensitivity and non-invasive nature of NMR have made it an established technique for in vivo studies of large organisms both for research and clinical applications. NMR would clearly be beneficial for analysis of entities at t ...

Hypervalent iodine reagents have recently emerged as powerful tools for late-stage peptide and protein functionalization. Herein we report a tyrosine bioconjugation methodology for the introduction of hypervalent iodine onto biomolecules under physiologica ...

Reactive intermediates formed upon irradiation of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) contribute to the degradation of various organic contaminants in surface waters. Besides well-studied "short-lived" photo oxidants, such as triplet state CDOM (3 ...

Brain metabolism evolves rapidly during early post‐natal development in the rat. While changes in amino acids, energy metabolites, antioxidants or metabolites involved in phospholipid metabolism have been reported in the early stages, neurometabolic change ...

The typical linewidths of H-1 NMR spectra of powdered organic solids at 111 kHz magic-angle spinning (MAS) are of the order of a few hundred Hz. While this is remarkable in comparison to the tens of kHz observed in spectra of static samples, it is still th ...

ER-phagy, literally endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-eating, defines the constitutive or regulated clearance of ER portions within metazoan endolysosomes or yeast and plant vacuoles. The advent of electron microscopy led to the first observations of ER-phagy ove ...

Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance under magic angle spinning (MAS) enhanced with dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) is a powerful approach to characterize many important classes of materials, allowing access to previously inaccessible structural and d ...

The acylpyrazolone proligands HQR (HQR in general, in detail: HQCy = 1-phenyl-3-methyl-4-carbonylcyclohexyl-5-pyrazolone, 4-C(O)-phenyl, HQPh = 1-phenyl-3-methyl-4-benzoyl-5-pyrazolone, HQC17 = 1-phenyl-3-methyl-4-stearoyl-5-pyrazolone, HQC17,Ph = 1-phenyl ...
