Free radicals are crucial indicators for stress and appear in all kinds of pathogenic conditions, including cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and infection. However, they are difficult to detect due to their reactivity and low abundance. We use relaxometry ...

The bacteriophage T4 genome contains two genes that code for proteins with lysozyme activity-e and 5. Gene e encodes the well-known T4 lysozyme (commonly called T4L) that functions to break the peptidoglycan layer late in the infection cycle, which is requ ...

Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the etiological agent for the tuberculosis disease, is a bacterial pathogen thought to infect about a quarter of the global human population. It is the first cause of death among infectious diseases, and is most prevalent in low ...

Bacterial resistance to conventional antibiotics is of major concern. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are considered excellent alternatives. Among them, D-cateslytin (D-Ctl, derivative of a host defense peptide) has shown high efficiency against a broad spec ...

Nanocatalyst-by-design promises to empower the next generation of electrodes for energy devices. However, current numerical methods consider individual and often geometrical closed-shell nanoparticles, neglecting how the coexistence of several and structur ...

Lignin is a phenylpropanoid polymer produced in the secondary cell walls of vascular plants. Although most eudicot and gymnosperm species generate lignins solely via polymerization of p-hydroxycinnamyl alcohols (monolignols), grasses additionally use a fla ...

Mechanisms to control cell division are essential for cell proliferation and survival. Bacterial cell growth and division require the coordinated activity of peptidoglycan synthases and hydrolytic enzymes to maintain mechanical integrity of the cell wall. ...

The peptidoglycan (PG) sacculus provides bacteria with the mechanical strength to maintain cell shape and resist osmotic stress. Enlargement of the mesh-like sacculus requires the combined activity of peptidoglycan synthases and hydrolases. In Escherichia ...

The Thermal Boundary Conductance (TBC) at the interface between metals and dielectrics is of key importance for heat transport in structures heterogeneous on a scale from 100 µm downwards. In this thesis the TBC of a large number of metal/dielectric couple ...

Mycobacterium tuberculosis is a slow-growing intracellular bacterium with the ability to induce host cell death and persist indefinitely in the human body. This pathogen uses the specialized ESX-1 secretion system to secrete virulence factors and potent im ...

The impact of nuclear data uncertainties is studied for the reactor power and the reactivity during control rod withdrawal transients with reactivity insertions of 0.5

and 0.97

, respectively, for a PWR mini-core model. Multi-group cross sections, the mul ...

Combination of biotic and abiotic factors influences the effects of naturally occurring or anthropogenic chemicals on photosynthetic microorganisms in the aquatic environment. Nonetheless, the combined effects of physical stressors and species-species inte ...

The fabrication of defined and high-quality metal nanostructures is an ongoing topic of research. Direct-write deposition of copper nanostructures is of great value for many fields of research and industrial applications. Focused electron beam induced depo ...

In the continuously developing field of lignocellulosic biomass, high-yield lignin depolymerization processes are sought to optimize its productivity and profitability. Recently, formaldehyde stabilization during lignin extraction and biomass pretreatment ...

The COVID-19 outbreak has fueled a global demand for effective diagnosis and treatment as well as mitigation of the spread of infection, all through large-scale approaches such as specific alternative antiviral methods and classical disinfection protocols. ...

Natural systems have marvelously utilized copper complexes featuring sulfur-coordinating ligands, known as blue copper proteins, as efficient electron-transfer mediators in biological processes. Copper complexes with sulfur-coordinating ligands have been a ...

The bacterial cell envelope is essential for viability, the environmental gatekeeper and first line of defense against external stresses. For most bacteria, the envelope biosynthesis is also the site of action of some of the most important groups of antibi ...

Similar to other prokaryotes, mycobacteria decorate their major cell envelope glycans with minor covalent substituents whose biological significance remains largely unknown. We report on the discovery of a mycobacterial enzyme, named here SucT, that adds s ...

Rod-shaped bacteria frequently localize proteins to one or both cellpoles in order to regulate processes such as chromosome replication or polar organ-elle development. However, the roles of polar factors in responses to extracellularstimuli have been gene ...

Microbial life in porous systems dominates the functioning of numerous ecosystems, ranging from stream sediments to soils. While these environments are characterized by structures that vary spatially over orders of magnitude, the traditional research focus ...
