In acute ischemic stroke, the composition of the occlusive clot can be associated with the underlying pathophysiology and the response to treatment. For these reasons, it is important to characterize the clot composition from clinical scans. We examine the ...

We analyse the haemodynamics of the left atrium, highlighting differences between healthy individuals and patients affected by atrial fibrillation. The computational study is based on patient-specific geometries of the left atria to simulate blood flow dyn ...

The oral administration of peptide drugs is hampered by their metabolic instability and limited intestinal uptake. Here, we describe a method for the generation of small target-specific peptides (less than 1,600 Da in size) that resist gastrointestinal pro ...

Background In factor XI (FXI) deficiency, bleeding cannot be predicted by routine analyses. Since FXI is involved in tissue factor (TF)-independent propagation loop of coagulation, we hypothesized that investigating the spatiotemporal separated phases of c ...

Despite significant advances in the treatment of thrombogenic diseases, antiplatelet therapies are still associated with a high bleeding risk. Consequently, potential benefits of preventing thromboembolic events by pharmacological agents need to be balance ...

Hemostasis is a complex physiological process responsible for the prevention of blood loss caused by vascular injury. The dysregulation of this delicate mechanism can lead to thromboembolic diseases, the leading cause of death worldwide. Anticoagulants are ...

Despite significant advances in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, antiplatelet therapies are still associated with a high risk of hemorrhage. In order to develop new drugs, methods to measure platelet function must be adapted for the high-throughpu ...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Flow-diverter stents are widely used for the treatment of wide-neck intracranial aneurysms. Various parameters may influence intracranial aneurysm thrombosis, including the flow reduction induced by flow-diverter stent implantation, ...

Peptides represent a promising molecular class for drug development. They combine several strengths of small molecules (e.g. efficient tissue diffusion, low immunogenicity and access to chemical synthesis) and key properties of biologics such as monoclonal ...

Background Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a complex multifactorial disease influenced by genetic and environmental risk factors. An example for the latter is the regular use of combined oral contraceptives (CC), which increases the risk to develop VTE by ...

Factor XII (FXII) is a plasma protease that has emerged in recent years as a potential target to treat or prevent pathological thrombosis, to inhibit contact activation in extracorporeal circulation, and to treat the swelling disorder hereditary angioedema ...

Laboratory blood testing plays a central role in current diagnostics and therapeutical decisions. Thus, errors have a direct impact on care quality and cost. The majority of errors occur in the pre-analytical phase, when samples are collected, stored and p ...

Cyclic peptides binding to targets of interest can be generated efficiently with powerful in vitro display techniques, such as phage display or mRNA display. The cyclic peptide libraries screened with these methods are generated by altering in a combinator ...

Coagulation factor XII (FXII) inhibitors are of interest for the study of the protease in the intrinsic coagulation pathway, for the suppression of contact activation in blood coagulation assays, and they have potential application in antithrombotic therap ...

The healing process of intracranial aneurysms (IAs) treated with flow diverter stents (FDSs) depends on the IA flow modifications and on the epithelization process over the neck. In sidewall IA models with straight parent artery, two main hemodynamic regim ...

Anti-coagulation treatments are required for medical conditions that become more and more frequent with the ageing of the population in developed countries (atrial fibrillation, deep-venous thrombosis, heart prosthetic valves, etc.). These treatments gener ...

Despite many therapeutic advances leading to increasingly effective drug treatments, thrombotic events (such as ischaemic stroke, pulmonary embolism, deep venous thrombosis and acute myocardial infarction) still represent a major worldwide cause of morbidi ...

A dynamic mixture of iron complexes was used as a colorimetric sensor for sulfated glycosaminoglycans. The sensing ensemble was prepared by mixing [FeCl2(H2O)4] with dipicolylamine, the functionalized bipyridyl ligand N-(6-aminohexyl)-4'-methyl-2,2'-bipyri ...

Angiogenesis is the process by which new blood vessels arise from existing ones by the budding out of endothelial cell capillaries from the luminal side of blood vessels. Blood vessel formation is essential for organ development during embryogenesis and is ...

This work reports the demonstration of a thermopneumatic microfluidic actuator used to determine blood coagulation time. In this new system, the detection principle is the obstruction of a microfluidic channel by clotted blood. The sample actuation is done ...
