Dielectric Elastomer Actuators (DEAs) have emerged as versatile and promising devices for a multitude of applications, including soft robotics, haptic interfaces, and artificial muscles. DEAs are an interesting soft actuator technology due to their high en ...

Humidity is a critical environmental factor in various applications, and its temperature dependence must be considered when developing thermo-hygrometer fiber sensors. The optical fibers that constitute the sensor must have a temperature reference, which s ...

Microchannel plates based on amorphous silicon have the inherent capability to overcome the existing spatial and temporal resolution limitations of single photon detectors. A Monte Carlo model-based study is presented here that serves to exploit their full ...

Systematic extraction of locally valid dynamic models from experiments is necessary for controller design and the validation of high fidelity models. This paper describes the extraction of a dynamic model in the form of a transfer function, giving the dyna ...

The acoustics of a room often refer to the quality of the room in terms of sound recording as well as sound reproduction. At low frequencies, where the wavelengths are of the same order of magnitude with the dimensions of the room, due to the standing wave ...

High quality factor (Q) nanomechanical resonators have received a lot of attention for sensor applications with unprecedented sensitivity. Despite the large interest, few investigations into the frequency stability of high-Q resonators have been reported. ...

Objective: In this paper, a new vibrational modal analysis technique was developed for intraoperative cementless prosthesis fixation evaluation upon hammering. Methods: An artificial bone (Sawbones)-prosthesis system was excited by sweeping of a sine signa ...

Distributed LSM-based databases face throughput and latency issues due to load imbalance across instances and interference from background tasks such as flushing, compaction, and data migration. Hailstorm addresses these problems by deploying the database ...

The sense of touch is underused in today’s virtual reality systems due to lack of wearable, soft, mm-scale transducers to generate dynamic mechanical stimulus on the skin. Extremely thin actuators combining both high force and large displacement are a long ...

Thin two-dimensional (2D) material absorbers have the potential to reduce volume-dependent thermal noise in infrared detectors. However, any reduction in noise must be balanced against lower absorption from the thin layer, which necessitates advanced optic ...

Since its invention in the 19th century, photography has allowed to create durable images of the world around us by capturing the intensity of light that flows through a scene, first analogically by using light-sensitive material, and then, with the advent ...

Modern rendering systems are confronted with a dauntingly large and growing set of requirements: in their pursuit of realism, physically based techniques must increasingly account for intricate properties of light, such as its spectral composition or polar ...

This paper reports on the design of a microsystem-based thermal gas viscometer used for the determination of the quality of natural gas and its optimization through modification of its two main components: the hotplate and the capillary tube. Features, suc ...

Nanostructured materials have attracted considerable interest over the last few decades to enhance sensing capabilities thanks to their unique properties and large surface area. In particular, noble metal nanostructures offer several advantages including h ...

Imaging devices have become ubiquitous in modern life, and many of us capture an increasing number of images every day. When we choose to share or store some of these images, our primary selection criterion is to choose the most visually pleasing ones. Yet ...

The emergence and broader availability of 3D audio systems allows for new possibilities in mixing, post-production and playback of audio content. Used in movie post-production for cinemas, as special effect by disk jockeys for example and even for live con ...

This article presents a Siren Disk proof of concept for the dynamic excitation of pressure probes, and a method to reconstruct distorted signals due to pneumatic channels. Constraints in sensor installation require placing a pressure transducer distant fro ...

An in-depth analysis of modern technologies could represent the base for the success of the High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider experiments. The requirement is a new reliable electronics in 1Grad-TID environments. For the purpose, single devices in TSMC ...

The diffusion layer is a critical factor affecting the temporal response of electrochemical devices. In this article, we have investigated the effect of the relaxation of the diffusion layer during the potentiodynamic sensing of ferrocenemethanol (FcMeOH) ...

Scaling down to nanometer size fluidic conduits has opened a new window into the world of sensing and manipulation of nanoscale species. Thousands of publications and hundreds of patents in this field are only a starting point for exploring and manipulatin ...
