Granular materials are omnipresent in many fields ranging from civil engineering to food, mining and pharmaceutical industries. Often considered a fourth state of matter, they exhibit specific phenomena such as segregation, arching effects, pattern formation, etc. Due to its potential capability of realistically rendering these behaviors, the Distinct Element Method (DEM) is a very enticing simulation technique. Indeed it makes it possible to analyze and observe phenomena that are barely if at all accessibl

Chem. mechanisms are used in 3D air quality models as well as for modeling lab. expts. Depending on the application the required detailedness of the mechanism differs. The mechanism generation program CHEMATA (Chem. Mechanism Adaptation to Tropospheric Applications) is able to generate explicit or lumped mechanisms according to the wishes of the user. In this work CHEMATA is applied for investigating the influence of different designs of mechanisms on the simulation results in a boxmodel study.

Our research focuses on animating autonomous virtual humans which are able to take decisions by themselves. We especially address in this paper the technical problem of integrating altogether the physical simulation of agents (represented as virtual humans in a 3D environment) and their behaviours and motivations, driven by a Beliefs, Desires and Intentions architecture. We also explain how goals drive plans, and how an agent can coherently handle concurrent tasks.

A novel method of controlling light absorption by exciton-polaritons is presented. The coherent light-induced coupling of excitons in multiple quantum well Bragg structures is exploited to sup press dramatically the absorption. Our results show that excitonic light absorption is not an intrinsic property of excitons but rather an extrinsic effect that occurs when the excitons dephase.

One of the intrinsic difficulties for in situ photoemission studies of high T-c oxide films is the surface volatility, especially the oxygen loss. In order to solve this problem, we have constructed a dedicated system for high T-c film surface studies, in particular for ARPES measurements. Here we briefly describe our pulsed laser deposition (PLD) system that is linked to the photoemission chamber at the Synchrotron Radiation Center (SRC) in Wisconsin, and discuss crystallographic and electronic properties

We report on the direct absorption measurement of the polarization selection rules in a V-groove QWR waveguide. Attenuation measurements in a 1 mm long waveguide were performed from 10 K up to room temperature. These measurements yielded the QWR DOS selection rules for lateral (TE) and vertical (TM) confinement directions. 1D heavy-hole like e(n)h(n) subband features were observed in the TE absorption spectra. Effective mass and 4 x 4 k . p models have been used to evaluate the band to band absorption. For

The resoln. limit of fluorescence correlation spectroscopy for two-component solns. is investigated theor. and exptl. The autocorrelation function for two different particles in soln. were computed, statistical noise was added, and the resulting curve was fitted with a least squares fit. These simulations show that the ability to distinguish between two different mol. species in soln. depends strongly on the no. of photons detected from each particle, their difference in size, and the concn. of each compone

The initial dynamics of resonantly excited secondary emission from quantum wells are dominated by Rayleigh scattering due to excitons localized in the disordered quantum well potential. We show experimentally and theoretically how the temporal shape of the early response is related to details of the two-dimensional disorder potential, and we determine the mean amplitude of the fluctuations and the correlation length. Spectral interferometry performed with a. single speckle allows to investigate the phase of

We propose a method to simulate muscle deformation in real-time, still aiming at satisfying visual results; that is, we are not attempting perfect simulation but building a useful tool for interactive applications. Muscles are represented at 2 levels: the action lines and the muscle shape. The action line represents the force produced by a muscle on the bones, while the muscle shapes used in the simulation consist of a surface based model fitted to the boundary of medical image data. The algorithm to model

During the past five years, we have developed in our laboratory a new type of solar cell that is based on a photoelectrochemical process. The light absorption is performed by a monolayer of dye (i.e., a Ruthenium complex) that is adsorbed chemically at the surface of a semiconductor (i.e., titanium oxide (TiO2)). When excited by a photon, the dye has the ability to transfer an electron to the semiconductor. The electric field that is inside the material allows extraction of the electron, and the positive ch

Analysis of the deflection of a circular membrane under differential pressure (bulge test) is a well-known method of determining the elastic properties of thin films. However, analytical models always suffer from simplifying hypotheses. In this study we present a new approach, based on numerical modeling, to interpret pressure-deflection curves. By adjusting Young’s modulus and Poisson’s ratio in the simulation program, it is possible to reproduce the experimental curves faithfully. The method was successfu

Charge-exchange collisions and radio frequency (RF) excitation combine to give peaks in the ion energy distribution measured at the ground electrode of an argon plasma in a capacitive reactor. These peaks are used as a diagnostic to reconstruct the profile of the time-averaged potential in the sheath. Particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations show that the method is accurate. The method is applied to investigate the sheath thickness as a function of excitation frequency at constant plasma power. The time-averaged
