Byzantine machine learning (ML) aims to ensure the resilience of distributed learning algorithms to misbehaving (or Byzantine) machines. Although this problem received significant attention, prior works often assume the data held by the machines to be homo ...

We consider the problem of sampling from a density of the form p(x) ? exp(-f (x) - g(x)), where f : Rd-+ R is a smooth function and g : R-d-+ R is a convex and Lipschitz function. We propose a new algorithm based on the Metropolis-Hastings framework. Under ...

This article addresses mixing and diffusion properties of passive scalars advected by rough (

C^\alpha

) shear flows. We show that in general, one cannot expect a rough shear flow to increase the rate of inviscid mixing to more than that of a smooth shear ...

Deep water circulation and mixing processes are responsible for the transport of matter, nutrients and pollutants in deep lakes. Nevertheless, detailed continuous observations are rarely available. To overcome some of these deficiencies and with the aim of ...

We review the state of knowledge on the bio-fluid dynamic mechanisms involved in the transmission of the infection from SARS-CoV-2. The relevance of the subject stems from the key role of airborne virus transmission by viral particles released by an infect ...

Mixing fluids often involves a periodic action, like stirring one's tea. But reciprocating motions in fluids at low Reynolds number, in Stokes flows where inertia is negligible, lead to periodic cycles of mixing and unmixing, because the physics, molecular ...

Nanoparticles and method for producing uniform silicate-based nanoparticles are disclosed. The method comprises a step of injecting into tubular branched elements comprising static mixers a first aqueous solution comprising a water-soluble silicate compoun ...

We report measurements of charm-mixing parameters based on the decay-time-dependent ratio of D-0 -> K+pi(-) to D-0 -> K-pi(+) rates. The analysis uses a data sample of proton-proton collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 fb(-1) recorde ...

We propose a nonlinear inverse kinematics formulation which solves for positions directly. Compared to various other popular methods that integrate velocities, this formulation can better handle fast, asymmetric and singular-postured balancing tasks for hu ...

Since the introduction of cementitious materials over 200 years ago, its use has multiplied many fold to be currently at 3 billion tonnes per year, accounting for about 8% of worldwide carbon emission which is forecast to double within the next 30 years. U ...

Contained density currents with high volume of release reflect against the boundaries of the reception environment commonly leading to oscillatory flow. These flows exist in sediment clarifiers, compromising their operations, and deposited signatures of co ...

We characterise computationally and experimentally a three-dimensional (3D) microfluidic passive mixer for various Reynolds numbers ranging from 1 to 100, corresponding to primary flow rates of 10-870 mu l min(-1). The 3D mixing channel is composed of mult ...

We study the mixing time of the Dikin walk in a polytope a random walk based on the log-barrier from the interior point method literature. This walk, and a close variant, were studied by Narayanan (2016) and Kannan-Narayanan (2012). Bounds on its mixing ti ...

The present study defines a procedure for gaining a better understanding of the interaction between the aged and the virgin binders and what actually occurs during a mix process. Indeed, the authors propose a methodology to determine and quantify the clust ...

The Ebro Valley in the outskirts of Zaragoza (NE Spain) is severely affected by evaporite karstification, leading to multiple problems related to subsidence and sinkhole formation. In this work, a combination of inverse (mixing + mass-balance) and forward ...

Mixing fluid in a container at low Reynolds number-in an inertialess environment-is not a trivial task. Reciprocating motions merely lead to cycles of mixing and unmixing, so continuous rotation, as used in many technological applications, would appear to ...

Nowadays, the production in fine chemical and pharmaceutical industry is mostly carried out in large scale batch reactors having typically dimensions of a few meters to satisfy the demand of the market. Even though this technology has been widely used and ...

This paper investigates age mixing processes arising in advection-dispersion models, where large-scale travel and residence time distributions can be explicitly calculated based on the underlying velocity field. In particular, we analyze spatially integrat ...

An image analysis technique is used to estimate the two-dimensional instantaneous density field of unsteady gravity currents produced by full-depth lock-release of saline water. An experiment reproducing a gravity current was performed in a 3.0 m long, 0.2 ...

We have made a precise measurement of the absolute branching fractions of B-s(0) -> D-s(()()+) D-s(()()-) decays using 121.4 fb(-1) of data recorded by the Belle experiment running at the Upsilon(5S) resonance. The results are B(B-s(0) -> D-s(+) D-s(-)) ...
