In the first results of electron Bernstein wave heating (EBWH) via O-X-B double mode conversion in a medium aspect ratio tokamak performed in TCV, the total power absorption efficiency was typically 60% and the deposition was made off-axis to avoid the central sawteeth perturbation that would prevent a clear detection of the deposition location. Central power deposition is however needed to maximize the global EBWH effects. Therefore, initial experiments have been started to optimize central deposition usin

The growth dynamics of oxygen assisted focused electron beam induced deposition of Si-containing materials (from SiOxCy to SiO2) were investigated as a function of relevant process parameters. The results obtained from organosilanes of different families (alkoxy, alkyl, and isocyanatosilanes) are compared. Residual water molecules in the SEM chamber were found to be responsible for side reactions leading to carbon etching and oxygen incorporation in focused electron beam induced deposition (FEBID) materials

The demand for tools suitable for deposition of small amount of material is continuously increasing. A standard SiN cantilever was modified in order to dispense single droplets of femto- and ato-liter (NAnoscale DISpensing (NADIS)). In order to open a nano fluid channel, holes down to 100 nm were milled in the apex of the cantilever using FIB. The liquid to dispense is loaded on the top-side of the cantilever extremity.

Nanocomposite thin films exhibit interesting optical properties which differ from those of the pure constituents. Effective medium theories are used to model the dielectric function of the nanocomposite materials. We give an introduction to the theories of ...

Recently, some research effort has been instigated towards micro and nano patterning of curved surfaces, as system miniaturization by means of patterned planar surfaces has practically reached its limits. In contrast to the more practical approach of existing research, the idea of this project was to do basic research on one effect encountered especially during vapour deposition on curved surfaces.

We report on a study of pentacene thin-films grown by high vacuum deposition on silicon dioxide, using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The nucleation density of pentacene islands on SiO2is found to rise as the deposition rate is increased but decreases at higher substrate temperature. This observation is consistent with the predictions of the rate-equation formalism for homogeneous nucleation. Hence, by controlling the two deposition parameters we are abl

The influence of the surface morphology of semicrystalline polyamide 12 PA12! on the adhesion of thin silicon oxide coatings is analyzed by means of uniaxial fragmentation tests and scanning local-acceleration microscopy SLAM!. Two types of PA12 substrates are investigated, namely, as-received PA12, which contains large spherulites, and quenched PA12, which has a relatively smooth, homogeneous surface structure. The adhesion of the coating is found to be identical for the two types of PA12. This indicates t

A hybrid technology for the realization of three-dimensional (3-D) miniaturized power inductors is presented. Our devices consist of planar Cu coils on polyimide substrates, and mm-size ferrite magnetic cores, obtained by three-dimensional micro-patterning of ferrite wafers using powder blasting. The coils are realized using an in-house developed high-resolution polyimide spinning and Cu electroplating process. Winding widths down to 5 um have been obtained and total device volumes are ranging between 1.5 a

Fabrication of high-density ferroelectric memories requires the growth of the ferroelectric material on the drain contact metal. In standard 0.5 mum technology, tungsten plugs are applied to connect the drain contacts to the first metallization level. In this work, we investigated electrode systems to be applied between sputter deposited, ferroelectric PbZr0.35Ti0.65O3 (PZT) and tungsten. Besides the obvious barrier function of such an electrode system, the texture of the PZT is of interest as well. The rou

We report here on ferromagnetic/superconductor FM/SC and SC/FM double layers deposited without a buffer layer between FM and SC. Thin films of La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO) are used for the FM, and YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO) for the SC. Both films can grow crystalline on SrTiO3 (STO) or LaAlO3 (LAO) substrates in high temperature and in oxygen atmosphere conditions. Magnetic and transport measurements and X-ray diffraction analysis are used to characterise film quality and properties. It is shown that off-axis magnetron sp

A short overview of recent work on electroceramic materials relevant to methane-fueled SOFC systems is given. Various fuel feed options are considered, such as pure methane, biogas, and the addition of reforming agents. The principle and implementation into SOFC systems of mixed conducting ceramics for oxygen separation is described, as well as their characterisation by electrochemical methods. Ceramic anodes capable of operating with methane-rich fuel injection are presented. The document concludes with el

Selective dissolution of titanium through a laser patterned oxide film has been achieved in a 3M sulfuric acid-methanol electrolyte. The 250 nm thick oxide film was formed anodically on a flat titanium surface in 0.5 M sulfuric acid. The patterning of the film was obtained by local irradiation using a long pulse XeCl eximer laser. Electrochemical dissolution at irradiated lines on the oxide film yielded well-defined grooves comparable to those resulting from electrochemical micromachining through a photores
