Microclimate models are increasingly used to assess the effectiveness of climate change adaptation strategies against future heat stress. These models require high-resolution climate inputs for multiple variables, including precipitation, air temperature, wind, radiation, and humidity. While the highest spatial and temporal resolution climate information is typically provided by regional climate models, particularly convection-permitting models (CPMs), it remains unclear whether CPM outputs still require bi

Data for: “Interactive effects of landscape position and soil diversity drive the spatial variability of soil organic carbon concentration in subalpine soils of Switzerland”. Preprint available on EarthArXiv: https://doi.org/10.31223/X52171 The interactive effects of topography, soil type, soil texture and moisture on soil organic carbon (SOC) concentration in subalpine environments remain largely unexplored. In particular, the extent to which soil type shapes landscape-scale SOC patterns remains unclear.

In a context marked by the urgency of climate change, dwindling resources, and environmental crisis, concrete action towards ecological transition and climate adaptation is a top priority for urban areas. In response to these multiple challenges, the research project "Maillages fertiles" seizes the opportunity of the reopening and renaturation of two urban rivers in Geneva, Switzerland, to explore the potential of innovative green open spaces as a climate adaptation strategy aimed at making the urban enviro

To address challenges in food security, a better understanding of crop performance under varying and changing environmental conditions is required. Plant Time Warping (PTW) is a deep learning model that integrates high-throughput field phenotyping data with genomic and environmental information to predict wheat yield. PTW leverages image time series, genetic markers, and environmental covariates to learn genotype-specific physiological responses to temperature and vapor pressure deficit. Compared to mere ge

Human-induced inputs of nitrogen (N) and phosphorous (P) disrupt global biogeochemical cycles and life itself. And yet there is no consensus on whether micro- or macronutrients are the main drivers of soil community assemblages. Tropical forests allow us to trace the response of nutrients on highly weathered soils, where previous studies have already shown N and P limitation. To address this, we conducted an N, P and NP field fertilization experiment in two French Guiana tropical rainforests (the Nouragues

Species distribution models (SDMs) are widely used to predict species' geographic distributions, serving as critical tools for ecological research and conservation planning. Typically, SDMs relate species occurrences to environmental variables representing abiotic factors, such as temperature, precipitation, and soil properties. However, species distributions are also strongly influenced by biotic interactions with other species, which are often overlooked in traditional models. While some methods, such as

The petrochemical industry and the plastics it produces are major drivers of climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss. Unlike the energy sector, defossilising chemicals is challenging because carbon is intrinsic to their structures. Lignocellulosic biomass offers renewable carbon, but current rigid bioplastics, whose cyclic structures are difficult to produce directly by fermentation, often replicate fossil-based structures, limiting resource efficiency and sustainability. While alternatives that ma

Geophysical mass movements such as landslides and snow avalanches represent major natural hazards, particularly in mountainous regions like the European Alps. Their dynamics arise from heterogeneous material compositions interacting with complex topography, rendering reliable prediction extremely challenging. Although remote sensing techniques provide detailed measurements of terrain shape and ground motion, these observations alone cannot predict mass movements. High-fidelity numerical approaches, such as

Changes in aerosols since the preindustrial era have altered the top-of-the-atmosphere radiation balance by directly scattering solar radiation and indirectly interacting with clouds, known as aerosol effective radiative forcing (ERFaer). ERFaer persistently remains one of the most uncertain components in global climate model simulations, due to the imperfect representations of aerosol and cloud properties and processes. Perturbed parameter ensembles (PPEs) are increasingly used to quantify these sources of

3D printing of soils is an emerging additive manufacturing technology with significant potential for various geotechnical applications. These include automating the construction of earth-based houses using locally available soil to reduce the carbon footprint of the building process, as well as constructing infrastructure such as embankments for roads or dams, clay liners for landfills, and engineered barriers. Moreover, due to its flexibility in designing varying printing geometries, 3D printing in geotech

Climate change scenarios foresee a drastic increase in atmospheric and soil droughts, driven by elevated vapor pressure deficit (VPD), in the future. However, the impact of coupled high VPD and soil water deficit on tree physiology is mainly untested, especially in the field. To disentangle VPD and soil moisture effects on mature trees, we installed a unique experimental setup in a 130-year-old natural pine tree forest. By misting water vapor towards tree canopies and excluding precipitation, we decreased V

Rainfall characteristics such as intensity, duration, and frequency are key determinants of the hydrogeomorphic response of a catchment. The presence of non-linear and threshold effects makes the relationship between rainfall variability and geomorphological dynamics difficult to quantify. Yet, this is particularly relevant under predicted exacerbated erosion induced by an intensification of hydroclimatic extremes and ensuing erosional processes. In this study, we evaluate the effects of rainfall temporal v

Environmental and economic sustainability is an increasingly important priority in civil engineering. In this context, the stabilisation of clayey soils offers an effective strategy for reusing excavated materials, thereby reducing the consumption of natural resources and minimizing transport-related environmental impacts. Typically, excavated geomaterials are compacted in situ under unsaturated conditions and employed in the construction of infrastructure such as roads and railway embankments, levees, dams

Moroccan oases, vital ecosystems in arid and semi-arid regions, are increasingly vulnerable to the impacts of drought, which severely affect vegetation health and elevate wildfire risks. This study investigates the relationship between drought severity, oasis vegetation vitality, and fire risk across various Moroccan oases. Using satellite remote sensing data, we developed the Aggregated Wildfire Hazard Index (AWHI), which combines the Watershed Integrated Multi-Drought Index (WIMDI), the Vegetation Health

In the water cycle, erosion begins with the entrainment of soil by raindrops. The discrete, discontinuous, and three-phase nature of raindrop erosion—at the boundary of fluid and granular mechanics—makes this problem particularly challenging, compared to better-studied sediment transport by river and wind currents. Past research has emphasized particle entrainment by raindrop splash at impact. Here, we report lab and field observations, that uncover a surprisingly rich and efficient postimpact phase. Raindr

India and China host ~45% of the world's irrigated area, with irrigation accounting for 65-75% of the total water usage in these countries. The impact of intense irrigation on regional precipitation and even monsoonal dynamics is well acknowledged. However, the degree to which recycled irrigation water helps sustain rainfed crops, acting as an indirect source of water supply, remains unknown. This is especially important in India and China, where irrigated crops are grown in close proximity to rainfed ones.

The Southern Ocean is a key component of the climate system, where clouds especially matter. Therefore, it is important to correctly simulate clouds in climate models. Even though there has been substantial improvement, climate models still struggle in their representation of cloud microphysical properties. In this study, based on data from the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition in 2026/17, we explore environmental factors, such as stable water isotopes in atmospheric water vapor, cyclones and boundary la

Invasive species pose a major threat to biodiversity and forest ecosystem services, and are expected to benefit from climate change, becoming even more impactful in the future. This thesis investigates the physiological strategies of Trachycarpus fortunei, an invasive palm increasingly spreading in sub-Mediterranean forests south of the Alps. The main objective was to assess how light, temperature, and water availability influence its performance compared to native tree species, to understand the mechanisms

In engineering education, developing a clear and shared vision of the curriculum is essential for coherent program design. While teaching philosophies have gained traction as a tool for personal and professional development, the idea of a "curriculum philosophy" remains underexplored. This workshop invites participants to clarify their personal curriculum vision and explore how to support academic teams in doing the same. Using creative approaches through photo-elicitation, participants will express and sha

In June 2023 Swiss people voted a new climate law that set a net-zero emission goal to be reached by 2050 via a full energetic transition from fossil fuels to renewables. The country’s Energy Strategy estimates that 7% (4.3 TWh) of future total renewable energy will be supplied by wind turbines, which requires an increase in the number of installed devices from the 37 currently operating to 760. Such an objective presents numerous challenges as available space is limited by technical restrictions, the
