With the never slowing interest in dielectric electroactive polymer (DEAP) actuators for medical applications, the need to optimize the management of the driving energy of these actuators becomes evermore important. In order to tackle the problematic of th ...

The design of a bi-state output buffer that can handle 5 times the supply voltage is presented. The use of self-biasing stacked devices driven by a cascade of complementary latches allows all devices to operate within the limits set by the technology, thus ...

Europe is currently making a great effort in order to improve the sustainability and reduce the environmental impact of its energy and transportation systems. A key role on these initiatives is played by efficient generation systems, like cogeneration, and ...

Many electric power generators use gas turbines as power sources. Typically they are connected to the turbines through a mechanical gearbox in order to adapt their synchronous speed to the optimal rotation speed of the turbine, which is very often much hig ...

In this article, we describe a novel hardware platform aimed at the realization of cellular architectures. The system is built hierarchically from a very simple computing unit, called ECell. Several of these units can then be connected, using a high-speed ...

Air-magnetic circuit breakers are widely used for short-circuit protection in dc electric railways or industrial plants. The well-known drawbacks of these breakers are mainly a slow breaking action, a short lifetime, and high maintenance costs due to the d ...

In the transportation field, the empty weight of the vehicle has to be as light as possible in order to have the highest energetic efficiency. For onboard storage electrical systems, dc/dc converters are usually used to control the power flows in the vehic ...

Making transportation systems more energy efficient is one of the key challenge in this century. This paper presents a solution for increasing the efficiency of an electrical scooter by adding a supercapacitive energy storage in parallel to the original ba ...

This paper presents the development of radial eddy-current position sensors for high temperature active magnetic bearing (AMB) applications. Thick-film technology was used to realize silver coils printed on ceramic substrates. Long term measurements showed ...

Following the trend in portable wireless communications, this dissertation explores new approaches to designing of power-critical building blocks in the elementary circuit level. Specifically, the work focuses on designs of baseband continuous-time Gm-C fi ...

Power Factor Corrected rectifiers are a new tendency in development of power supplies. In the last few years, a lot of R&D activities have led to a new category of products for one-phase applications. In this contribution, a new simplified topology is prop ...

In symmetric multilevel inverters, there is a tradeoff between the output quality and the reliability and efficiency of the converter. New asymmetric and hybrid solutions, using different voltages and devices in various parts of the inverter, promise signi ...

The performance of HTS devices is strongly influenced by local values of the current/field distributions. In this paper, we investigate the influence of the magnetic field and of the geometrical configuration on the loss behaviour of a 200kVA FCL prototype ...

This paper presents the operation principle and the properties of a single-phase DC-AC converter with medium frequency transformer and soft commutation. The influence of the non-dissipative snubber capacitor and the transformer parasitic components for ZVS ...

Geometrical aspects of the design of fault current limiters (FCL) have a great impact on their performance. Recently, the University of Geneva have presented optimized geometries obtained by splitting the FCL into many small dissipative lengths in order to ...

This paper presents a hybrid energy storage system based on Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES), where the charging and discharging is done within maximum efficiency conditions. As the maximum efficiency conditions impose the level of converted power, an ...
