Developing agents that can reliably act on our behalf is central to artificial intelligence (AI). These agents must seamlessly interact with tools, like search engines and databases, and collaborate. In this thesis, we study the abstractions, methods, and ...

Performance-critical industrial applications, including large-scale program, network, and distributed system analyses, are increasingly reliant on recursive queries for data analysis. Yet traditional relational algebra-based query optimization techniques d ...

The different receptors in human skin show not only diversity in the stimuli to which they respond, but also variable sensitivity and directionality. This is often determined by their location or morphology, and can play an important role in filtering or a ...

The recent rise in interest in point clouds as an imaging modality has motivated standardization groups such as JPEG and MPEG to launch activities aiming at developing compression standards for point clouds. Lossy compression usually introduces visual arti ...

The field of text-to-video retrieval has advanced significantly with the evolution of language models and large-scale pre-training on generated caption-video pairs. Current methods predominantly focus on visual and event-based details, making retrieval lar ...

A range of behavioral and contextual factors, including eating and drinking behavior, mood, social context, and other daily activities, can significantly impact an individual's quality of life and overall well-being. Therefore, inferring everyday life aspe ...

One of the primary causes of non-uniform snowfall deposition on the ground in mountainous regions is the preferential deposition of snow, which results from the interaction of near-surface winds with topography and snow particles. However, producing high-r ...

As data sizes continue to expand, the challenge of conducting meaningful analysis grows. Utilizing I/O (Input/Output) libraries, such as HDF5 (Hierarchical Data Format) and ADIOS2 (Adaptable IO System), facilitates the filtering of raw data, with prior res ...

Implanted medical devices (IMDs) have been widely developed to support the monitoring and recording of biological data inside the body or brain. Wirelessly powered IMDs, a subset of implantable electronics, have been proposed to eliminate the limitations r ...

Addressing the environmental impact of electronic waste in biomedical sensing, an eco-conscious approach to the realization of a Chitosan-based Acetone sensor tag for wireless gas monitoring is presented. The fabrication involves inkjet printing of silver ...

The use of point clouds as an imaging modality has been rapidly growing, motivating research on compression methods to enable efficient transmission and storage for many applications. While compression standards relying on conven- tional techniques such as ...

We propose an image-based elastography method to measure the heterogeneous stiffness inside a cell and its nucleus. It uses a widely accessible setup consisting of plate compression imaged with fluorescence microscopy. Our framework recovers a spatial map ...

The invention relates to an Imaging sensor device in a stacked arrangement comprising: - a pixel array tier comprising a plurality of pixel segments each having a plurality of pixels for photon detection each providing a digital pixel output; - a processin ...

In this thesis, we explore techniques for addressing the communication bottleneck in data-parallel distributed training of deep learning models. We investigate algorithms that either reduce the size of the messages that are exchanged between workers, or th ...

In the development of implantable bioelectronics, the establishment of efficient wireless RF links between implants and external nodes is crucial, providing substantial contributions to the advancement of medical diagnosis, therapies, and basic science. Im ...

The advancement of data-driven decision making has become a key priority in political agendas and private sector strategies. However, the growing demand for data and the opacity of data-driven systems raise concerns about the threats to individual privacy ...

The use of Internet of Things (IoT) sensors for air pollution monitoring has significantly increased, resulting in the deployment of low-cost sensors. Despite this advancement, accurately calibrating these sensors in uncontrolled environmental conditions r ...

In the current era of big data, aggregation queries on high-dimensional datasets are frequently utilized to uncover hidden patterns, trends, and correlations critical for effective business decision-making. Data cubes facilitate such queries by employing p ...
