Developing agents that can reliably act on our behalf is central to artificial intelligence (AI). These agents must seamlessly interact with tools, like search engines and databases, and collaborate. In this thesis, we study the abstractions, methods, and ...

Driving continuous, low-power artificial intelligence (AI) in the Internet of Things (IoT) requires reliable energy harvesting and storage under indoor or low-light conditions, where batteries face constraints such as finite lifetimes and increased environ ...

Early work has found that large language models (LLMs) can generate persuasive content. However, evidence on whether they can also personalize arguments to individual attributes remains limited, despite being crucial for assessing misuse. This preregistere ...

MammAlps is a multimodal and multi-view dataset of wildlife behavior monitoring. Nine camera-traps were placed at three monitoring sites in the Swiss National Park, from which we curated over 14 hours of video with audio, 2D segmentation maps and 8.5 hours ...

In visual backward masking (VBM), a target is followed by a mask. Over the past decade, a VBM task, called the Shine-Through paradigm (ST), has been shown to be a very sensitive endophenotype of schizophrenia. In the present thesis, the electrophysiologica ...

First impressions are critical to professional interactions, especially in service industry like hospitality. In the service industry, customers often assess quality of service based on the behavior, perceived personality, and other attributes of the front ...

Language acquisition theories classically distinguish passive language understanding from active language production. However, recent findings show that brain areas such as Broca's region are shared in language understanding and production. Furthermore, th ...

Understanding the effects of environmental stimulation in autism can improve therapeutic interventions against debilitating sensory overload, social withdrawal, fear and anxiety. Here, we evaluate the role of environmental predictability on behavior and pr ...

Clinical observations have shown that GABA-acting benzodiazepines exert paradoxical excitatory effects in autism, suggesting elevated intracellular chloride (Cl-)(i) and excitatory action of GABA. In a previous double-blind randomized study, we have shown ...

Recent works have identified a gap between research and practice in artificial intelligence security: threats studied in academia do not always reflect the practical use and security risks of AI. For example, while models are often studied in isolation, th ...

Perceiving others in pain generally leads to empathic concern, consisting of both emotional and cognitive processes. Empathy deficits have been considered as an element contributing to social difficulties in individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) ...

Atypical face processing plays a key role in social interaction difficulties encountered by individuals with autism. In the current fMRI study, the Thatcher illusion was used to investigate several aspects of face processing in 20 young adults with high-fu ...

Articulating the interplay between collective memory and artificial intelligence, this paper examines the SAILDART archive, a unique digital collection derived from the backup tapes of the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (SAIL). Preserved somew ...

Autism is a pervasive neurodevelopmental disorder of unknown etiology, characterized by a spectrum of symptoms of social impairment, abnormal communication, and unusual restricted, inflexible behaviors. Patients also frequently present various levels of se ...

Genes implicated in translation control have been associated with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). However, some important genetic causes of autism, including the 16p11.2 microdeletion, bear no obvious connection to translation. Here, we use proteomics, g ...

Gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA)-mediated synapses and the oscillations they orchestrate are altered in autism. GABA-acting benzodiazepines exert in some patients with autism paradoxical effects, raising the possibility that like in epilepsies, GABA excites ...

Background: Visual behavior is known to be atypical in Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Monitor-based eye-tracking studies have measured several of these atypicalities in individuals with Autism. While atypical behaviors are known to be accentuated during ...

This symposium Article discusses issues raised for patent processes and policy created by inventions generated by artificial intelligence (“AI”). The Article begins by examining the normative desirability of allowing patents on AI-generated inventions. Whi ...

In the rapidly evolving AI era with large language models (LLMs) at the core, making LLMs more trustworthy and efficient, especially in output generation (inference), has gained significant attention. This is to reduce plausible but faulty LLM outputs (a.k ...
