Ultra-High-Performance Fibre Reinforced Cementitious Composite (UHPFRC) has recently been used to design lightweight structures and strengthen existing ones, with more than 300 applications in Switzerland. Several composite timber-UHPFRC bridges have been ...

In the majority of active sound absorbing systems, a conventional electrodynamic loudspeaker is used as a controlled source. However, particular situations may require an actuator that is more resistant to harsh environments, adjustable in shape, and light ...

Environmental noise, mostly related to human activities, has an immense impact on public health. The development of noise reduction technologies is paramount in addressing this problem. Because of practical and economic reasons, a compact, broadband, light ...

The Second Dongting Lake (SDTL) Bridge is the longest steel truss girder suspension bridge in China, which has a main span of 1480 m. To alleviate deterioration issues in the orthotropic steel deck (OSD), the steel-ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) li ...

Ultrahigh-performance concrete (UHPC) offers significant potential to address a variety of needs in bridge design, construction, and performance enhancement. Bridge owners have shown willingness to embrace novel solutions that could address specific challe ...

Conventional loudspeakers generate sound through the vibration of a diaphragm, attached to a rigid frame through elastic suspensions. Although such construction is satisfactory for sound diffusion in steady environments, it is likely to fail in harsh condi ...

The fatigue safety of the reinforced concrete deck slab of a sixty-year-old steel-concrete road viaduct as well as the riveted steel girders of a 130 year old railway bridge was questioned based on the results of conventional assessment consisting in "re-c ...

Since the collapse of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge more than 70 years ago suppressing wind-induced instabilities has been a key aspect of the design of long-span bridges. The intensive experimental and theoretical research in wind engineering allowed research ...

Aluminum structures provide a high strength-to-weight ratio, are corrosion resistant, and are esthetically pleasing. Hence, their use in bridge construction has recently begun to increase, especially for pedestrian bridges. Because of their relative light ...

The current provisions for the braking force in the Eurocodes are much more demanding than previously enforced national codes from most European countries. Hence, safety assessments of existing bridges may show a lack of compliance with the new safety requ ...

Modern bridge construction all over Europe in the last decades, has highlighted the importance of steel solutions for the design of bridges. Steel bridges have become slender and lighter with the generalisation of welded connections. These features increas ...

In this work, we investigate active flutter control of a bridge section model equipped with arrays of flaps. We consider three simple control algorithms based on an amplitudegain and a phase-shift for actuating the flaps and stabilizing the section model. ...

Steel and steel-concrete composite bridges made of plate girders represent an economical structural form and are largely used for short and medium spans. Two parallel plate girders connected by cross-beams define a twin-girder bridge. This type of bridge t ...

Due to ever increasing traffic demands the fatigue safety and service life of the bridges of a railway line in Brazil need to be examined. Conventional assessment methods using load models and approaches as suggested in codes lead to conservative results r ...

The addition of a thin overlay of Ultra-High Performance Fibre Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC) to Reinforced Concrete (RC) members is an emerging technique to strengthen and protect existing structures and to design durable new structures. Combining UHPFRC wi ...

Nowadays, requirements for acoustic treatments in rooms are ever more demanding in terms of performance and compactness. A recurring issue in closed spaces is the occurrence of standing waves and acoustic interferences at low frequencies. These unwanted ph ...

Over the past decades, an increasing number of bridges with integral abutment have been built in Switzerland. This type of bridge offers various advantages over standard bridges with abutments, equipped with expansion joints and bearings that require regul ...

Variable acoustic properties can be obtained at the diaphragm of an electroacoustic transducer, with the help of very basic control strategies, among which is the simple electrical shunting of the transducer. These shunt techniques are compared to active a ...

The acoustic impedance at the diaphragm of an electroacoustic transducer can be varied using a range of basic electrical control strategies, amongst which are electrical shunt circuits. These passive shunt techniques are compared to active acoustic feedbac ...

Modal acoustics is one of the main sources of annoyance in the low frequency range in rooms. Active noise control techniques can be deployed to reach sufficient acoustic benefit, but limited to a single frequency, whereas broader efficiency would require c ...
