Hydrogels are among the first materials expressly designed for their use in biomedicine. However, state-of-the-art applications of hydrogels are severely limited because they are typically either too soft or too brittle such that they cannot bear significa ...

The limitations and potential complications correlated with autogenous bone grafts have raised interest in the development of synthetic bone graft substitutes. ß-tricalcium phosphate (ß-TCP) is one of the most promising materials for synthetic bone graft s ...

Despite the development of hydrogels with a wide range of mechanical properties, insufficient adhesion between these materials and biological surfaces limits their use in the biomedical applications. Most recent advancements in highly adhesive hydrogel sys ...

The prediction of implant behavior in vivo by the use of easy-to-perform in vitro methods is of great interest in biomaterials research. Simulated body fluids (SBFs) have been proposed and widely used to evaluate the bone-bonding ability of implant materia ...

Inspired from additive manufacturing's success, the structuring of biocompatible materials through bioprinting has become a growing field of research in the past fifteen years. It opened the door to a plethora of applications ranging from the fabrication o ...

Engineered fibrous tissues consisting of cells encapsulated within collagen gels are widely used three-dimensional (3D) in vitro models of morphogenesis and wound healing. While cell-mediated matrix remodeling that occurs within these scaffolds has been ex ...

The prediction of implant behaviors in vivo by the use of easy-to-perform in vitro methods is of great interest in biomaterials research. In the field of bone implants, it is commonly accepted that a spontaneous formation of a hydroxyapatite (HA) layer on ...

Several approaches to combine bone substitutes with biomolecules, cells or mechanical loading have been explored as an alternative to the limitation and risk-related bone auto- and allo-grafts. In particular, human bone progenitor cells seeded in porous po ...

Hierarchical porous structures have been gathering interest in different fields owing to their unique properties associated with their multi-scale features. The observation of natural materials brought new insights into the functionality of cellular materi ...

The invention provides for a bioactive composition comprising solid particles, such as e.g. calcium phosphate particles, loaded with an active agent, preferably an osteoconductive/osteoinductive agent or an anti-resorptive agent like a bisphosphonate. The ...

Laser-induced optical breakdown (LIOB) is a multiphoton process which can be used for selective removal of material. It revolves around the creation of a plasma in the focal volume of a beam, and requires very high peak intensities in the order of the GW.c ...

Locally applied bisphosphonates, such as Zoledronate, have been shown in several studies to inhibit peri-implant bone resorption and recently to enhance peri-implant bone formation. Studies have also demonstrated positive effects of hydroxyapatite particle ...

With advances in fetal diagnosis and therapy, fetoscopy has become a good option to treat a series of life threatening diseases like twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome or severe congenital diaphragmatic hernia. The efficacy of fetoscopy for those types of d ...

Regenerative medicine aims to repair body tissues when natural mechanisms fail. Growth factors (GFs) are essential proteins that promote tissue regeneration upon injury, and as such, are very promising therapeutic drugs in regenerative medicine. Due to the ...

Thin polymer films that prevent the adhesion of bacteria are of interest as coatings for the development of infection-resistant biomaterials. This study investigates the influence of grafting density and film thickness on the adhesion of Staphylococcus epi ...

This thesis advances the field of dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) through the development of device designs, fabrication processes, strain characterization technique and modelling tool. It provides the first demonstration that DEAs can be interfaced ...

Polyethylenimine (PEI) is a promising gene carrier among polymeric vectors because of its high transfection efficiency, buffering capacity, which is responsible for its escape from endosomes, facility of modification, reasonable price and wide range of mol ...

Iatrogenic preterm prelabour rupture of fetal membranes (iPPROM) occurs in 6-45% of the cases after fetoscopic procedures, posing a significant threat to fetal survival and well-being. The number of diagnostic and therapeutic prenatal interventions availab ...

The invention of heart pacemakers in the 50's aims to help patients to overcome heart strokes, which represent the first cause of death worldwide. In Europe and in the USA, more than 3000 pacemakers are implanted every day. Despite the constant evolution o ...

Osteoporosis is a major health problem in our aging society. This metabolic disease, which is characterized by a deterioration of the bone microarchitecture and a significant loss of bone mass, is affecting a rising number of mostly elderly patients. The m ...
