Environmental concerns are leading to a fast transition in electric power systems towards replacing fossil fuel and nuclear generation with renewable generation. This transition has two significant implications for electric power systems: 1-The capacity o ...

Described is a closed-loop control scheme capable of stabilizing a parametrically excited nonlinear structure in several vibration modes. By setting the relative phase between the spatially filtered response and the excitation, the open-loop unstable solut ...

The Foucault pendulum provides a demonstration of the turning of the Earth. The principle at work is that linear oscillations of a two-degree-of-freedom isotropic harmonic oscillator remain unchanged in an inertial frame of reference, so appear to precess ...

In 1851 Léon Foucault created a sensation with his pendulum providing a direct demonstration of the turning of the Earth. This simple device consists of a pendulum which is launched in a purely planar orbit. Following Mach's principle of inertia, the mass ...

Perception depends on reference frames. For example, the "true'' cycloidal motion trajectory of a reflector on a bike's wheel is invisible because we perceive the reflector motion relative to the bike's motion trajectory, which serves as a reference frame. ...

Fuel cell and hydrogen technologies are re-gaining momentum in a number of sectors including industrial, tertiary and residential ones. Integrated biogas fuel cell plants in wastewater treatment plants and other bioenergy recovery plants are nowadays on th ...

This paper describes the City Energy Analyst (CEA), a computational framework for the analysis and optimization of energy systems in neighborhoods and city districts. The framework allows analyzing the energy, carbon and financial benefits of multiple urba ...

Equipped with a third hand under their direct control, surgeons may be able to perform certain surgical interventions alone; this would reduce the need for a human assistant and related coordination difficulties. However, does human performance improve wit ...

We investigated how the visual system selects a reference frame for the perception of motion. Two concentric arcs underwent circular motion around the center of the display, where observers fixated. The outer (target) arc's angular velocity profile was mod ...

The inter-area oscillations are common in power system and can occur due to the changes in the load or generation power especially in long transmission lines. This paper presents the design of a robust fixed-order loop shaping controller to damp out the in ...

The retinotopic projection of stimulus motion depends both on the motion of the stimulus and the movements of the observer. In this study, we aimed to quantify the contributions of endogenous (retinotopic) and exogenous (spatiotopic and motion-based) refer ...

This paper proposes a Model Predictive Control (MPC) scheme to solve the target estimation and tracking problem. The objective is to derive a feedback law that drives an autonomous robotic vehicle to follow a target vehicle using an on-line estimate of the ...

Many visual attributes of a target stimulus are computed according to dynamic, non-retinotopic reference frames. For example, the motion trajectory of a reflector on a bicycle wheel is perceived as orbital, even though it is in fact cycloidal in retinal, a ...

A reference frame is required to specify how motion is perceived. For example, the motion of part of an object is usually perceived relative to the motion of the object itself. Johansson (Psychological Research, 38, 379-393, 1976) proposed that the percept ...

The provision of energy at the local level by using renewable and local resources is increasingly acknowledged as a techno-economic solution for rural electrification. This work describes an approach for implementing microgrid projects at the institutional ...

Microaerobic (oxygen-limited) conditions are critical for inducing many important microbial processes in industrial or environmental applications. At very low oxygen concentrations, however, the process performance often suffers from technical limitations. ...

In this work we present the implantable and wearable measurement system developed for smart knee prostheses monitoring. The kinematic measurement system contains three anisotropic magnetoresistive sensors embedded into the polyethylene part of the prosthes ...

This paper presents a vector control strategy for regulating the current of grid-tied voltage source converters (VSCs) in a rotating reference frame. The proposed approach is based on shaping the open-loop and closed-loop transfer matrices of the system. S ...

This paper presents a vector current control method tailored for single-phase voltage source converters. In order to imitate the behavior of a three-phase system, the Fictive Axis Emulation (FAE) concept is employed. The latter is able to synthesize the ro ...

A key feature of Modular Multilevel Converters (MMC) is the continuous and independent nature of the branch currents. Therefore, a decoupled control of the line and partial bus currents is possible, unlike for classical topologies. To this end, several con ...
